i think in practice a scenario like you mentioned with a boat, realistically women wouldn’t get priority anymore - at least in the US. For instance, on 9/11, i would bet pretty much anything that they weren’t leaving men under rubble to try and find women first. Another possible explanation is that both men and women evolved to be protective of women because one man can impregnate several women, while a woman will usually only bear one child at a time, so it makes sense for societies to keep women safe so they can reproduce. i personally think this is the foundation of any “male disposability.” Biologically, women are more valuable than men so it makes sense we’d see that manifest in a number of ways
