Sorry. Can’t force a hearing for divorce in my state if you aren’t physically separated for a year. If your spouse is agreeable and will sign the papers, it may not matter, but more than likely they aren’t agreeable, otherwise you might not be divorcing them.

Not my state. And who wants to stay in the house with someone that hates you? How is that good for the kids in anyway? It’s traumatizing as shit for everyone. This blanket don’t leave the house advice that everyone gives out is horrible advice. Everyone should talk to their lawyer and the goal should be to stop the trauma for everyone as soon as possible. Your house isn’t going to be given away if you leave and neither will your kids. That’s what the divorce settlement and custody agreement are …

You don’t automatically “abdicate” the proper or custody by leaving the house! OP talk to your attorney and don’t listen to this. It’s possible you do in your state, but you need to know for your situation. I put myself through hell last summer listening to this advice. I could have and should have left 3 months before I did. I’d already be fully divorced had I and would have given up no rights to that house or custody. That’s just not the way it works. I don’t understand where people get this s…

This isn’t necessarily the case depending on which state you live in. In my state you can’t take the other party to court to force a divorce until you’ve been physically separated for a year. Discuss this with your attorney and figure out what is best for your situation. The blanket “don’t leave the house” is bad advice because it can leave you in a hostile situation and actually could harm you legally. But again, ask your attorney what you should do. And OP - she calmed down for now. It won’t l…

Agreed. Unless you have cause don’t get too caught up in the false accusation thing - it will make you paranoid which can lead to you acting dumb. Just respect her privacy and expect the same in return. Try to calmly but steadily walk toward the exit with help from your lawyer.

Good to hear. Just give it time though. Don’t stress about big changes right now. If you’re anything like when I was 3 weeks into my divorce, your head is likely a complete mess. I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t think, I couldn’t eat. Just be kind to yourself right now and get through this. When your head starts to clear and you have physical separation from her, that’s when you can really start to figure out what changes you want to make and start implementing them. Everything is just so raw right …

Run this through an attorney. This sounds very less than ideal. You need to go your own way, not be tied at the hip with two pieces of property.

I echo the others here. It’s over. Don’t mean to be harsh, but the sooner you can accept that and move on, the better for you. This talk of “the old me” is bullshit. You shouldn’t be changing for her anymore. Change because you want to change into the person you want to be. It’s your kids and you now. She isn’t in the picture anymore. Get an attorney and find another therapist. You need to be in therapy now not in November. Best wishes. You will get through this. It does get better.

This is the answer. Proceed with the divorce and file for custody as quickly as possible.

I’m having to start over with everything right now. I feel like I’m back to heading off to college and I’m trying to stock my dorm room. How did it come to this?

It’s been about 5 months since the divorce started. Serious issues in the marriage have been ongoing for a long time but it kicked up really bad at the end of last year. We only very recently separated, which has brought major relief from the constant marital conflict, but has brought up other emotions due to not seeing my kid and some loneliness. That’s good your accepting. That’s the first step. I was in denial about what needed to be done for years and years. Just try to stay active - I mostl…

Well at least you’ve got space. Good luck with everything. Emotions will go in waves. This is tough. I’ve been told it will get better, I’m not quite there yet though.

The eating can take time. I lost a lot of weight without realizing it early on. Just do the best you can but don’t beat yourself up over it. This is a process. Go on walks. It will help you clear your mind and it will help you sleep because it will tire you out.

You’re welcome. Good luck. Just curious, did she leave?

You need to find a way to move on. Showing her your anger can do nothing but hurt you. I hate to say this, but from what you’ve said, it is over. She’s checked out emotionally- and it’s no longer your issue that she’s texting another man. I highly recommend therapy. Books can be good, but you need another human being that will listen to you and help you through this painful time. Your way out of this pain is by forming new connections to pull you out of the pain and in to your post divorce world…

Mainly just need to be able to precisely follow directions. You do this and you’ll be amazed with what you end up cooking.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
