English of course has its ambiguities but it seems implied that saying "he" in reference to a named male and an unfamiliar friend would refer to Rob. She asks why. What I want to say is "because he invited me?" because this causes no confusion whatsoever. But I can't, and it is now impossible for me to use the singular "they" without altering the meaning of the sentence. Does "they" refer to Rob? Or did his friends also invite me along?
