The article states the woman has poor English skills, combined with the fact this was in BC Canada, I'm guessing she was of Asian descent. Chinese to English has a pretty harsh learning curve, so I'm gonna go with the hypothesis that a high-end dealership did indeed advise her of the possibility of a high repair bill, or they probably asked if she has comprehensive insurance, she didn't quite understand and just said 'insurance yes' and they went off to the races. Either way LMAO.
