States already make use of the alternatives you mentioned and not using conscripts would just make them weaker and thus draw a target on their back, ultimately leading to more death. As for protests, they can and sometimes do work. This is why it's so difficult to conscript people for offensive wars and even Russia relies mostly on volunteers. People casually make so many jokes about men that not only do I feel ashamed of my body, but also insane for being attracted to men and masculinity. The rational part of my brain knows that it's not betrayal, but sharing my views on men's issues and feminism wouldn't go over well in most queer communities, and disagreeing with the non normative relationship with gender people on how it behaves in our society is a big and nigh irreconcilable rift.
