Learning to manage your disability or mental illness is not the same as hiding it. I’ve been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, so I take meds and go to therapy to keep my anxiety manageable. That’s not fake. That’s being a functional adult. I didn’t feel more authentic when I was having panic attacks at work lol.

It’s not fake to work on yourself and develop social skills.

I’m a guy. I think for a relationship to work you need to have core values in common, but it can be nice to have opposite/complementary personality traits. My girlfriend is very fem; I’m pretty masculine. We both believe in gender equality but enjoy many aspects of traditional gender roles in our personal lives. Besides that, I’m fairly reserved while she’s really extroverted and is great at breaking the ice. Conversely, I’m good at planning and managing finances while she’s kind of uh… scattere…

If we’re just talking about physical traits, how about broad shoulders, big biceps, or an athletic physique? Not to mention there’s a lot more to attraction than physical traits. Dudes who struggle with dating like to focus on height because they can’t change it and they want their lack of success not to be their fault, meanwhile they ignore all of the other factors that are actually in their control, like fitness, style and personality.

Guys who struggle with dating love to focus on height because they can’t change it, meanwhile they ignore all the factors that they can actually control. They want a reason why their lack of success isn’t their fault, so they chalk it up to their height instead of their shitty personality.

As an introvert who doesn’t have trouble getting dates I guess I’m some kind of crazy anomaly then. In my experience, quiet women usually like quiet men.

Men have been getting educated and having careers for a long time, and they always seem to have had time for women. What makes it different for women with careers?

So like gold digging? I’d argue that gold digging is a) frowned upon by most people, including women, and b) not super common unless you’re a wealthy celebrity or something. Fortunately, most of us don’t have to worry about that.

What does it mean to “use” someone for a relationship, and how is that different than just being in a relationship?

You can feel okay about your face even if it’s not the best, and focus on the other parts of yourself that you do love. Not having the face and body of a model doesn’t automatically make you depressed. You say you come off as creepy (I assume you’re talking about yourself), but you also say you’re not bad looking, so I don’t think you can really blame your looks if you’re coming off as a creep.

That’s a big question. Let’s see… I’d like to see an emphasis on the traditional aspects of masculinity that aren’t harmful. How about more emphasis on self-reliance (but not to a fault), leadership, healthy competition, working with your hands, a connection to nature, and standing up for those who can’t defend themselves? Maybe being a man doesn’t have to have anything to do with dominating someone else. It also doesn’t have to mean that you can’t express your feelings, ask for help, or feel vu…

If it’s socially rejected it’ll be expressed in unsavory ways. Oh yeah, I forgot how when the women’s rights movement faced resistance women celebrated violence against men, tried to take their rights away, committed mass shootings, and even started calling men “masc-oids”. How could that have slipped my mind.

Yes. If they meant “unhealthy relationship with alcohol” I assume they would say that.

This is your argument? Lot of non-alcoholics and successful people drink alcohol also lol. The vast majority of people who drink are not alcoholics.

There are a lot of real issues that men face that aren't talked about as much as they should be, but the problem with the manosphere is that it's mostly a) anti-woman rhetoric and b) strategies for getting laid. Issues like male suicide rates seem to only ever get brought up to try to dismiss some problem that women face, and most of the "solutions" proposed to solve male problems involve taking away women's rights. A positive men's lib movement would be doing things like advocating healthy form…

Do women really lead these men on or do they just see them as friends and aren't interested in a relationship? Unless a woman is literally lying and pretending she's going to fuck someone when she has no intention to, this is not the same situation at all. You know boys and girls can be just friends right?

I figured we were assuming the gender opposite version of us is equally attractive by typical beauty standards, not just ourselves with a sex change 😆. I don’t think I’d be a very pretty girl lol.

She challenged a couple aspects of the post, including the idea that men's attraction is only visual. You can agree with some of OP's ideas and disagree with others.

I think for many guys it's far more pleasant and effective to ask people out in real life. I'm not talking about a cold approach. I mean meeting someone in a class, or at a party, or meeting a friend of a friend at a bar or something (you know, how people used to get dates). If you feel like your looks aren't enough to land you a date on their own, try asking out someone you've met in real life who's actually had an opportunity to get to know you. If you're reading this and thinking these opport…

I think “holistic attraction” is a great way to put it. Your looks matter, but it’s also about a larger sense of who you are. I have a theory that this is why male strippers almost always wear some kind of uniform. He’s not just some sexy ripped guy, he’s a sexy ripped firefighter who pulls people out of burning buildings and rescues cats from trees.

It's hard for me to understand how this works in practice. Are all these women dating each other? Are there a bunch of Chads in polyamorous relationships with multiple women? I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, just trying to figure out how this works.

Can you explain what you mean by gap? Are you saying there are more single men than single women?
/r/PurplePillDebate01/06/23 10:41 PM

Yeah. I guess my point is that in a modern economy most of us are pretty incapable of basic survival skills. Also, I know you're just responding to the argument, but I don't really get what the point of it is supposed to be anyway. This feels like an attempt for soft-bodied keyboard warriors to try to take credit for holding society together by lumping themselves in with farmers and tradespeople.
/r/PurplePillDebate01/06/23 09:02 PM

Can someone explain what the point of this completely hypothetical argument is supposed to be? Okay, we need farmers and tradespeople, and most of them are men. So what? I'm an office worker who can't grow my own food or fix my own plumbing anyway. You might as well just argue that people in farming or the trades are essential.

Speak for yourself please. Don’t project your shitty attitude on to all men. Not all of us see women as objects or servants.

Hopefully the messaging gets through to some of them. It’s not a black and white dichotomy of shitty men who harass women vs. respectful men who never do anything wrong. There’s a spectrum, and I think the messaging could be effective for some of the edge cases. Once again though, I want to emphasize that I’m pretty sympathetic to what you’re saying. I consider myself a good person but sometimes get anxious about my behavior being perceived negatively because I’m a man. I mostly just wanted to p…

I think this is a pretty good explanation, and I largely agree with the sentiment, but I think it’s important to keep in mind that women really do get sexually harassed quite a bit. My girlfriend and I have been walking and talking on the phone most nights for the past few weeks and she’s been catcalled twice just while I’ve been on the phone with her. Sexual harassment is probably less common than it used to be, but it’s still pretty pervasive. If the messaging sometimes goes too far, I still t…

I work hard at my job because I want a high quality of life and to retire relatively young. I work hard at my hobbies because I’m a perfectionist with an obsessive personality lol.

Almost every woman in this thread is saying they're attracted to confidence. Seems a little presumptuous to just assume they all don't actually know what they're attracted to, but for some reason you know what they're really attracted to.

Totally. I suppose it's more of a benefit for people who are more reserved, less so if you don't mind just going for it.

Why is it so incomprehensible to you that most women’s sexual attraction might just work a bit differently than yours? Doesn’t that seem more likely than a weird elaborate theory that most women rarely feel sexual attraction? This sentiment just smacks of seeing women as “other”. I don’t know how else to put it. They’re people, just like you. Of course they get horny. Do you have many female friends? If you did I think you’d see pretty quickly that your theory is completely wrong.

My sexual fantasies are deeply personal to me and not something I would share with just anyone. So sure, I guess that’s “on me” but I think it’s a reasonable boundary and many people feel the same way.

I relate to this very much. I’ve mostly learned to let this feeling go as I’ve gotten older, but throughout my teenage years and early 20s I definitely felt pressure to have casual sex to prove I had value as a man. Even if you know that it’s kind of dumb, it’s hard to let go of the idea that having casual sex proves that you’re cool/desirable/masculine/whatever.

I can only speak anecdotally but I personally find that sex tends to get better over time. I haven’t had the experience of being with someone for decades and decades (I’m sure you hit diminishing returns eventually), but I’ve had several long term relationships and I find the sex gets better as you develop emotional intimacy and get really good at doing what the other person likes (and vice versa). You also explore each others’ sexual fantasies and get to try all the weird shit you’d be too emba…
