It's a case of categorisation and perception. Rather than saying "men" are causing a problem, why don't they just say "inconsiderate people" are causing a problem? ANYONE can take up too much space on a subway, whether its spreading your legs or putting your bag on the seat or anything.

It stops recidivism 100% to have the person locked up for life or executed, but there is no evidence to support that the threat of long sentences stops a crime from happening in the first place. You're exactly right, prison is to keep dangerous people locked up. And that is exactly my point - keep him locked up as long as he is dangerous and try to rehabilitate him. That does not mean give him a cushy lifestyle at the taxpayer's expense. It means make him a productive and non-violent contributor to society. Okay so send him to prison until he is rehabilitated, whether that's 3 years or 30. You don't need to imprison him until he is an old man. It costs the state more and is purely retributive.
