Why will work against me in the long run? Hey, listen. I don't want to the win the conversation, I just really think dishonesty is a bad idea. It is the very first impression that person gets of you and unless you are so great to turn the situation around with humor or superior game you will make everything even more awkward. To give an obvious beginner the advice to inadvertently set himself up for failure isn't very nice. Have you tested your own advice?

How does one start to get social proof from scratch if you don't know any "connected" people or are very shy? How did you build your fame? Where did you start out? Especially in the current pandemic and with all the lockdown measures there aren't many opportunities to go out and meet new people. Why can't you just ask the time? Isn't necessary start immediately a conversation, just escape a little bit off your "comfort zone". Then you can go over, and repeat (Almost) Everyone carries a phone these days. It would be very awkward to pull out your phone to exchange contact info in case the conversation hooks.
