Down here, you cop a fine if you don’t show up to vote in state and federal elections, so yes, I vote. I recently voted in a local council election. I read all the candidates’ spiels, and picked the three who most positively, efficiently described what they were going to do with my money. SPOILER: None were women

Shaming blokes who see prozzies is absolutely a thing, but I think it comes from 1. Women and 2. Chads who never see the point of paying for it because they get plenty for free, and project their situation onto non-Chads. At work I mix mostly with blue-collar blokes; they’ll be the last to shame you for going to a brothel.

I find it to expensive also, when I think about it what else I could do with that money. A young fella I worked with told me that after his first trip to a brothel (a fairly high-end one apparently), he found himself thinking, “She was hot, and it was good, but for $400 I could have got that new fishing reel...”

I agree, if it’s about the coffee. After paying AUD4-5 per workday for my barista-made large flat white for years, I’ve just started making my own at home; grinding the beans by hand, brewing, steaming the milk, the whole deal. For five bucks I get 3 weeks’ worth of beans!

Yeah there’s always the option of working for yourself, which is what most switched-on blokes end up doing. As part of your studies, see if you can get your comms ticket (Open Registered Cabler). After you’ve qualified, split-system A/C ticket would open up more work. You can do an apprenticeship with a group training organisation like NECA; they pay you and train you and basically pimp you out. If possible, I’d still try and do your apprenticeship with a contractor, because you will learn more.…

Mate I’ve done all sorts: started off doing residential, new houses and distribution network connections (“Level 2” in NSW). Then moved into commercial, doing mostly comms (data, optical fibre) in large offices and warehouses. I’d say over the years it’s been 50/50 construction/service. These days I’m on industrial construction projects (mineral processing plants, etc). Industrial work is the best paid, but in the beginning, get into the trade however you can. Ask around local Electricians to see if you can do work experience with them during the holidays. This is great advice. If he goes and gets his Construction General Induction (White Card) in advance, it’ll make it easier. A first aid ticket might be good too, depending on location.

Cheers mate! The spot is on Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia. I've never been to the Territory, but it's on my radar too, mainly for Kakadu NP and of course Uluru.

Bloody oath! I got a look at the Barrier Reef when I was over there for work years ago, and it was fantastic. The reef in the pic is the much smaller and less famous Ningaloo Reef, on the other side of the continent.

Where I am, you get in by doing a 4-year apprenticeship, while going to trade school for 3 of those years. I know plenty of electricians who got through the academic stuff by a bee's dick. I've always been academically inclined, so no worries for me there, but I was behind on a lot of the practical aspects. If I had to pick a less academic trade, I'd be a tiler (as in floor tiles, NOT roof tiles). A bit of maths involved, an art to master; not much equipment required. Could be sweaty, dusty work…

DO IT. I think it's good for a man to move around with his work, to use his hands and to get dirty. You'll also have the option to work for yourself. You'll look back at that office hell and shake your head at the people in it. Very few of them have a clue how anything works.
