When people tell me that I'm too guarded, my response is that I'm guarded because I want to stay safe. This poor woman is a perfect example of why I'm guarded about my private information. It only takes one toxic, entitled, abusive man to ruin your life, change it adversely, or end it.

What worries me is that men take pictures of women, without permission, everyday. Men take our picture when we are grocery shopping, on public transportation, waiting in line, etc. Some creepy guy, petty co-worker, or someone angry that you rejected them can now take your picture, create a deepfake, and post it online as porn.

Thank you for this post. I love that it is science based, and it is easy to apply to real life situations. Clear, concise, strategic advice. This is a great post.

Me too. Instead of helping his wife and bonding with his 4 month-old baby, he is hanging out with his ex. The ex comes to their house to spend time with him even AFTER the wife told both of them she didn't want her there.

This is a perfect example of why the vetting process is so important. It's important to questions, and analyze the answers objectively. I feel so bad for his wife.

Yes, I agree. This post made me realize just how bad this situation really is. I've been looking at each incident separately, now I see the whole picture. It's bad. I'm going to get make a police report before going to speak to the management company. Hopefully the police report deters them from retaliating, or blowing me off. My lease runs until next year, but if I find an affordable place I'm going to move before the end of the lease. My safety, and peace of mind are my priorities.

Yeah, I already started researching home security cameras. I need to get one asap. Unfortunately, I think you are right about him coming into my apartment.

You are right, that is stalking. I didn't think about that. I know he is keeping track because he told me he was doing it. After he said that, I started being careful, looking around when I pulled out or into my parking spot, and he is always around. This is a big complex, over 100 units spread out. There is no way it's a coincidence that he's always around when I leave and come back. Yeah, I'm definitely going to make a police report. Edit: spelling

Thanks for the advice. I'll try to figure out a way to avoid being alone with him. If I have to be alone with him, I'll keep my phone with me at all times, maybe pre-dial 911 so I only have to hit the call button. I have a smart lock, and a deadbolt. He can open the smart lock with an app, but it will create a record of him coming in to my apartment. The management office probably has a master key, I don't know if he has access. I also have an alarm system. I always keep the alarm on, and the de…

Yeah, it sucks that she had to find out the hard way. I wonder why she didn't try temporary tattoos, and a clip-on ring or something.

Thanks, I didn't even think about that. He definitely has shown a lot "red flag" behavior. The way he was acting today made me very uncomfortable - sense of entitlement, condescension. He was visibly upset when I didn't act the way he wanted. He actually tried to leave without finishing the job (to "punish" me), but the trainee kept telling him they had to finish. Maybe I need to file a complaint with the management company. I hate this, some random guy decides he's entitled to my time, attentio…

This is 100% true. Seeing manipulators for who they really are is an eye opening, and life changing experience. The book, "Why Does He Do That?" by Lundy Bancroft, does a great job at explaining why abusive people react badly when we set healthy boundaries.

This is great. Thank you OP. I wish I had learned this life lesson earlier in life. It is abuse, it can derail your career, and your life.

THIS! It's such an important distinction - supporting v. enabling.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
