I do take issue with people who cherrypick the one little thing they like about "back then" and hold up the past as some sort of utopia, much better than what we have now, when in fact, it wasn't anywhere close to that. And I recognize that we are a constitutional republic and as such, criminal sentencing should be based on rehabilitation, not revenge. Why? Because perjury is a crime and making false police reports is a crime, but neither of them are equivalent to the crime of rape. Any sentence should fit the crime committed, which was not rape. No one asserts that people who make false reports of trespassing, assault, theft, drug dealing, etc., be given the equivalent punishment to any of those crimes, several of which would result in prison time, so why should rape be any different?

I'd prefer moving away from the practice altogether. The only couple around my age that I know who has gotten an engagement ring has been my sister and her husband. Yes, I oppose punishing women for being pregnant. There is virtually no way to make a case for prosecution within the confines of the U.S. constitution. In the U.S., one can only be charged with killing a fetus if they do so during the commission of another crime, and only on a very narrow basis federally. On the state-level, it varies, with some charging homicide, some varying the charges based upon fetal development, some not charging homicide at all.
