It's good to understand peoples motives but if you do it for everything your brain will explode. Also its good to not waste energy on unimportant things like this, peoples motivates are often simple or lame/illogical anyway and it's obnoxious. I wouldn't waste the brainpower unless its an interesting situation or you have something to gain from it. Just my opinion.
