Though I do not have children, it is also my distinct belief that they can conversate when they're that old. :-) As I see it the best reaction would have been an immediate expressed indignation over, how she can even think that. The next best thing would just be to take it up at the next given opportunity: Talk to her about, and be upset. Not angry, but upset, in a way that allows her to see your indignation.
