It's not so much a way to demonstrate confidence so much as a way to build it I would say. Just living in a world where every minor action of yours has potential to be judged harshly as unacceptable, and as a result needing to live as carefully as possible, can harm an otherwise confident person's confidence to the point of becoming meek (I believe this is a concept known in feminism as well?). I doubt what he really was going for was true racism or sexism, but rather the capacity to be that way. I.E letting himself do what he feels like in opposition to what society considers acceptable. That builds confidence. He probably didn't become an outright racist or misogynist but isn't terrified of coming across as that way now.
