For many centuries, marriages were arranged, based on property and assets. Romantic matches were almost nonexistent. People were basically trying to survive. There was almost no dating. No one had time for leisure. People paired up out of necessity. The industrial revolution changed all that. A middle class was created. Not everyone was living hand to mouth. Physical strength wasn’t so necessary. And people, both men and women - could live more independently. One didn’t need to farm or hunt for …

In my experience, you cannot control what your partner does. My partner allowing boundaries to be crossed, especially more than once, would be seriously disrespectful. But I can only control my own behavior, not his. So I would calmly communicate the boundary being crossed and if he continues with the disrespectful behavior, end the relationship. If course that’s overly simplified. Way overly simplified. I’m sure there would be a lot of back and forth and various boundaries would have different …

This is pretty accurate, although I wonder if the nuances in the definitions are consistent through the English-speaking world. Speaking for myself and other women I personally know, women are attracted to power/prowess: be it physical, intellectual, financial, ambition, charm, artistic, etc etc etc. And different women go for different kinds of power. Intellectual prowess is a necessary trait for me for me. Another woman might be primarily looking for a man who is physically powerful. Another w…

If a male “friend,” challenged my boundaries, I would find it personally disrespectful and stop considering him a friend, or spend less time with him, or whatever. I’m pretty confident that my fiancé would do the same. The younger version of me might think differently, but I have reached the age and experience that understands being hit is not always flattering and is often disrespectful under certain circumstances.

Healthy boundaries are one of the unspoken bedrocks of a healthy relationship. And good boundaries only come from within oneself. You cannot impose them on your SO. My fiancé and I place no such boundaries on each other’s friendships because we both maintain them internally. Although I have no doubt he encounters women who hit on him, I have no concern that he might cheat on me. And vice versa. And when you get to a point in adult life where you have full-on careers and kids, you end up having f…

Right? “Ummm… 524… i think… but wait, how do you count an orgy?”

Correct on this. It gets even less attention in your 40s and 50s.

But why does it matter? If you’ve found a good match, then it just doesn’t matter who’s in what “league.” That’s the point of OP, and I totally agree.

Born in 1970. Was actually an early member of match.com (late 1990s). Been married, divorced and am now happily engaged. I hang here because i have a 13 yo son and daughter. The big change has been the proliferation of dating apps. And with those, I think there’s been a serious BBD problem. Your first date/meeting might be fine, but your date has an inbox full of other possibilities that might be a bigger, better deal. So they don’t give you a chance, or not a fair one. You have to be perfect an…

This is one of those posts I just don’t understand. I’m in the middle of the US, and my personal life is full of good men/fathers and good women/mothers. I know several young couples who are recently married, engaged or about to be engaged. Do actual statistics back up these theories?

Met on okcupid 7 years ago. He was 50, I was 45. Second marriages for both. Met my first husband at work.

Absolutely correct re historic shipwrecks. They were typically every [man] for himself. There is no chivalry on a sinking ship. And when it comes to war, i would argue that when the fight makes it to your front door, there is no gender either. Certainly, when shells land, they don’t hit only adult men.

I’m not 100% of what 5/10 is supposed to be, but I have been invited to 4 weddings this year. In every case, none of the grooms are models, or pro athletes, or wealthy (one went thru bankruptcy last year). None are even overwhelmingly athletic, beyond say amateur softball players. But all are honest and attentive to their fiancées, as well as confident and kind. And they do have ambitions professionally. I mention this because I am still not sure I buy into this theory.

Yes, exactly. At first it was like seeing my little brothers, then my nephews. That’s why big age-gap relationship are so off-putting. Because whether it’s a man or a woman who’s the older half, it’s like, “Really?”

I didn’t mean that exactly. It’s just that as you get older, you go through all kinds of good and bad experiences. Life can be hard. Life can be brutal. You get a “past.” And you realize that the people you meet also have “pasts.” You get a whole lot more forgiving and understanding.

My experience is that young people care. People in their 30s and older don’t.

I’m older (51f). When i was in my 20s and 30s, I was attracted to men close in age and I was NOT attracted to older men and could not imagine ever being attracted to older men. But, as I got older, I did become attracted to older men. And I don’t have any sexual attraction to young men. They look like babies to me. Also, my fiancé feels the same, as do other male friends I know. If you guys are younger and hanging out in “younger” clubs, you might see the random older man or woman trying to desp…

Us older folks don’t give two sh*ts about n count. My fiance and I both have high counts. We’re both thankful to have found a partner who is enthusiastic about sex.
