I’m sure I own a lot of responsibility for it. The problem is I have no idea what it was that I did. I mean that literally: up until maybe two months before she told me she hadn’t loved me for a long time she was telling me I was the best thing that ever happened to her and she couldn’t imagine life without me. We never fought, we always had fun together, we were (I thought) deeply connected. The biggest area where we were lacking was our sex life and she had some health issues that made that ch…

Honestly the one who calls you both out on your bullshit is the way to go. Whenever I start with a new personal therapist the first thing I ask is that they don’t validate me unless they actually agree with me and will freely call me out when I’m on my bullshit.

Mine wasn’t. If anything she was biased towards me once she saw how my ex wife was gaslighting and manipulating me. She actually made my ex leave the session a few times and called bullshit on her.

What state are you in? You need to speak to a lawyer in your state because there’s a lot of variance in state law. In most cases it’s only the assets (and debts!) that are accrued DURING the marriage that are divided. Any assets you owned prior to the marriage are yours, with the exception of a few edge cases like: If you spent MARITAL funds to improve your house or pay the mortgage, she could be owed a portion of the appreciation for that. Likewise if she used her own money to do the above. If …

I didn’t, because I was afraid my boss would make me take time off, because he’s that good of a dude. But time off was the last thing I needed… it would have just left me alone with my thoughts and spiral. Being able to focus on work gave me something to do and not just think about the divorce.

Second getting a lawyer. I did a quick search on KY alimony laws and it seems that there’s no set formula for alimony. Instead judges have broad leeway in awarding alimony. It unfortunately seems that in KY permanent alimony is possible for long term marriages, which yours is at 19 years. No idea how common that is. Because of this you should at least do an initial consult with a lawyer to see what you might be looking at if you went before a judge. You might also want to consider mediation with…

Yes, your lawyer should be your advocate. HOWEVER… part of being a good advocate is giving you realistic, grounded advice. The last thing you want is a lawyer that is happy to spend $100k in court to save you $10k. You also don’t want a lawyer that’s going to tell you exactly what you want to hear. You want a lawyer that will not only protect you from your spouse, but also protect you from yourself.

In Florida it depends on the length of the marriage. A marriage of < 10 years results in alimony up to 50% of the length, marriage of 10-20 years is up to 60% of the length, and a marriage of > 20 years is up to 75% of the length. The amount is the lesser of the recipient’s “reasonable need” or 35% of the difference in net incomes. I was married almost 23 years, and am paying $4500/month for 14 years. This was negotiated between us, not court ordered.

So the best thing you can do is talk to a lawyer. They will be familiar with the laws in your state. Here’s the thing as far as I can understand: she can’t just take your Social Security. What might happen is one of you might owe the other alimony/spousal support based on the length of the marriage and difference in incomes. Alimony is based on need and ability to pay. She can’t just say she gets your SS. Both of your incomes will have to be looked at to see who owes what to who, if anything. Al…

Oh I know for sure she was, but we were poly so that wasn’t a problem in and of itself. But this particular guy was something of a shit stirrer, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he was egging her on.

I don’t know that my STBXW has said those things specifically but she has said some similarly triggering things. For context: she told me out of the blue she didn’t love me and hasn’t loved me for at least ten years, despite spending 23 years of marriage telling me I was the best thing to happen to her. She moved out at the earliest possible opportunity to go live with a friend while we did couples counseling. So at various points during this whole process she’s talked about how hard it’s been o…
