That is a very good point. When I first watched it I saw the girls as liking him not because of all of his new changes, but because of just the fact that he was working out.

This is exactly right. How can a beta watch this movie and not change his life? Of course it is just a movie, but I think most the examples it uses are completely accurate.

I grew up with a brother and a sister. My brother and I are friends and I have a great relationship with my sister because I treat her according to her gender role. If I treated them the exact same she would probably walk all over me.
