the relationship was "consensual" (yeah, underage, but not violent rape) The whole concept of underage is that the person can not give consent. They do not the mental ability to consent to what they are doing. True or not, that is the law, so it has to be treated as completely nonconsensual. Many consent laws are more lenient for young teenagers, but for most places 12 and under is just plain unacceptable.

Fixed: forgot to put 299 out of 1000. All probability is cumulative. If there is a 1 in 6 chance (17%) of rolling a 3 on a die (or getting assaulted each year), and you roll the die 6 times (survive 6 years), there is a 5/6 x 5/6 x 5/6 x 5/6 x 5/6 x 5/6 chance (66%) of getting a 3 at least once. Sounds that way to me. But what does the 1 in 4 number mean? The devil is in the details. Is that over their life times? If you have a 5.9 in 1000 chance of getting assaulted each year, then over 60 years, you have a 299 in 1000 chance of getting assaulted. (1-((1-5.9/1000)60 ))*1000 Does that include women assaulted more than once? If one woman is unfortunate to get assaulted every year (or even more) than that is really going to drive the numbers up. edit: formatting

Numbers don't lie, but I can pick which numbers I want to tell you. For example, most housing markets are positively skewed (more cheaper houses, with a declining number of more and more expensive houses). If I want it to look like the houses are cheaper in an area, I'll tell you the median. If I want them to look more expensive, I'll tell you the mean, which is larger in a positively skewed distribution. I haven't lied to you, I've just manipulated the numbers to tell the story I want to tell.

How to lie with statistics is an excellent book that everyone should read. A more accurate title would be "How to tell when others are trying to lie with statistics." It doesn't actually cover much stats, but it does show page after page of how data can be manipulated to show whatever you want it to show.
