You’re allowed to say no when people ask you for stuff. Doesn’t make you a bad person. I think you should definitely have a discussion with your son about it though, why he thinks you should, why you think you shouldn’t. Nobody has to be right or wrong, but it might help both of you to hear the other’s point of view. Best of luck.

If properly represented, each sides lawyer gets 50%. At least from my experience.

I got no fuckin idea mate, I just wanted to say congrats and welcome to the club. 5 years divorced here and sometimes wondering why the fuck I’m still subscribed to this sub - until I see positive wins like yours. New life ahead of you, enjoy it!

Hey man it looks like you’ve got some great advice already. I just wanted to wish you the best and share my own experience. For maybe 2-3 years I was too scared to leave and finish a 7 year marriage (10 years relationship). Looking back those years were terrible for my mental health and I wish I had the balls to finish it sooner. I know it can be a really hard decision in the moment - but deep down you know what you’ve got to do. Look after yourself. The sooner the better, future you will thank …

I stayed with a fat alcoholic for years longer than I should and I’ll never get those years back - but I’m still glad I got out eventually.

Yeah no worries. Great crowd for general advice! Can be a little pessimistic sometimes, but let me say - I wish I knew about this sub back when I was going through it… absolutely some advice here would have saved me a lot of trouble in the years after separating.

Five years ago my ex turned up drunk at 7am on Christmas Day and hurt herself tripping on the floor (where it changes from tiles to carpet) after I asked her to leave. Apparently she bruised herself and took some photos, then used them about two years later to make threats of reporting me for DV using those photos. Lucky for me she is a meth head now and sent the threats via text… could have gone a lot worse. Anyway, point of story is… listen to everyone here, you’re separated now, be separated.

Congratulations, reading this made me happy. Divorced a bit over a year ago. Couldn’t be happier. It gets better every day. Good job.

On corruption, we could just be overexposed to your bad news flowing on issues like your politicians insider trading pre-COVID, trumps Russia ties, the Ajit Pai shitfest, Flints water problems, police brutality, housing crisis, the dodgy COVID loan process... hell, it was only this morning I was reading about private military contracting shenanigans on another thread... I know the news is supposed to expose this stuff, but if you throw enough shit, eventually some sticks and right now it smells …

I never said Americans were stupid. I think the government is corrupt, healthcare is fucked and it’s overall not a country I would choose to live in.

Sure, if a living is all you’re after, maybe try New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles... there’s plenty of better places in the world to earn a better living without all the bullshit though. Not an American but the parts I have seen have small areas of wealth, surrounded by blaring issues caused by a failing system. The same could be said about Russia and China.

Absolutely... the politicians make any announcement and instead of asking the real questions - it’s always followed with some journo saying “that’s nice but there seems to be some mixed messages about schools... is it safe to send kids to schools or not?” They get the same reply, then wait for the next press conference to ask it again in the same or slightly different way.... never questioning what was said, just shooting for the same unrelated question again and again...

I think there’s many questions that could be asked after each of the endless press conferences at the moment. The journos at these conferences seem to be stuck on repeat with stupid questions about “whether kids should be going to school or not”, “whether we’re allowed to go to the beach over Easter or not”, etc... I was surprised there was no questions like “why does this support package cover Jenny’s free stay in a hotel after she received a nasty voicemail from her partner, but not Jim who go…
