"Of Boys and Men" is a book by Richard V. Reeves detailing the challenges that men face. I think it's a great starting point for this topic.

Yeah. I've seen women attack men for "man spreading" on public transit. Sometimes you just can't sit with your legs closed!

Kind of off topic, but as an Environmental Scientist I often get upset about how news articles more often lament the loss of an economic opportunity rather than lamenting the loss of so many beautiful aspects of the environment itself. I definitely see the same with men's issues. They ask "how can we make life easier for us" instead of "how can we help boys and men?" I don't really know what it will take to fix this, though.

I've never heard it described like this before. When these random people on the internet write emotionally charged quips for clicks, it is certainly modeled after a very specific type of man.

I'm not going to do the work of citing my sources at the moment, but I recently read that women in the average profession are now making as much if not more than men (except in CEO / upper-management roles). However, their expectations for status in partners has not changed, as most still expect the man to be the primary bread winner. This leaves less options, so American men go overseas where they are probably still the bread winner.

That's fucked up. Like sure, for everything there is a time and place, but they could have honed in on your desire to verbally process information instead of throwing you in detention to do nothing.

I've experienced being the "Gay Best Friend" first hand in a variety of ways. I think This Ted Talk explains how it feels in a clear manner. In a way, it feels like you're the exotic animal at the petting zoo, the ride at the amusement park, the sassy comedy relief in a drama film. On the other hand, (although not a particularly well written nor academic essay) this pop culture article makes a great final point: as much as we stereotype the gay best friend trope, we also tend to stereotype the w…

Do you have a source for your claim, or are you just speculating? Genuinely curious about this statistic.

I think your points are interesting ones to make, though I'm curious as to why it would be touted as a pay gap, implying women are paid less when they are not. Women's net incomes are lower than men's because they work less. From my own experience (acknowledging a sample size of one) that's not a problem that can be solved by paying women more, but it's the only solution I've ever seen suggested.

Hey just so you know, I clicked through most of the links you provided and only found 3 that work. They were great reads though. I really am the hard evidence

Right? I'm not getting "woman basher" I'm getting more that the prof just wants a more complete analysis lol

You did really well with this analysis. When I first read the article, I missed the double standards between the gay men and the lesbians. It's really reaching for something that isn't there. Not only does the author want to change the definition of masculinity, he blames academic failure solely on masculinity, which doesn't even make sense. Masculine men have been successful at academia since humanity figured out farming and could spend their days on things other than finding food.

Hey, I appreciate your response, but I don't agree with some of your points. So the article stated the following: It’s likely that the success of gay boys and men in the classroom is tied to the fact that they often feel like “outsiders to the culture of masculinity enforced by their straight peers,” according to Mittleman... Emphasis added The blame for feeling emasculated was placed on straight people, not straight men, and that is important. From my own experiences, I have been emasculated mo…

It's so sad to read stories like yours and see new data showing that there are now 2 women for every 1 man in college. It's proving this fabricated narrative that men are inferior and not equal is working. It's so bizarre to me how people treat men as if they should just "suck it up, try harder" when they are clearly suffering. It's awful that your school ignored your parents requests to get you tested. I'm glad you were able to kick society in the ass, graduate high school, and become successfu…

Gay man here. I found this article rather pointless because in my own experience, I ran to books as a way of finding myself, not as a way to escape masculinity. I think Mittleman's assessment is regurgitating popular buzzwords so that it sounds true without being a thoughtful analysis. To say that 'alienating' masculinity is the reason gay men study completely ignores all the time I've felt alienated from the matriarchal home and matriarchal branch of Christianity in which I was raised. I rememb…

Gay man here. To say that compensating for a lack of masculinity is the reason gay men study completely ignores all the times I've felt alienated from the matriarchal home and matriarchal branch of Christianity in which I was raised. I remember learning in school that men are inherently less intelligent than females, and that had way more of an impact on my desire for higher education than not liking football. These kinds of assessments are so lazy and devoid of reason that it just feels like co…

Its stupid how "intelligence" is only ever assessed by one metric in these buzzword articles. "Do yOu HaVe a fOuR yEaR dEgREe tHoUgH?!"

Hey there. I've been in therapy for 2 years now. I have a female therapist because that's all that was available to me through my college. In therapy, I primarily talk about my mother who verbally and emotionally abused me growing up. I also talk about a female religious leader who abused me financially, emotionally, and verbally. I also talk a lot about a female ex-friend who had a schizophrenic episode from drug abuse and lied to all my friends about how i was extremely mean and judgemental to…
