I always had a bad feeling about Hasan. Good to see my gut reaction was justified.

Loosely: a male love interest who is morally gray, dangerous, and brooding, yet fiercely protective and devoted to the heroine.

Because what's inside the box of masculinity is attractive to these folks, whereas what's outside of it is repulsive (hence the saturation of Shadow Daddies in romance lit)

If doing so didn't come at the cost of one's ability to reliably attract a partner, I'd agree with this sentiment. Unfortunately, reality is not so kind.

This is pretty "yeah, no shit" from most men's perspectives, but communicating this phenomenon to my female peers has been nearly impossible so far. I'm glad someone is researching this formally. Good God, it's three years old???

At least in the US, we're generally raised to see each other as competitors by default. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, the notion that to "be a good man" one must be nearly entirely self-reliant & in need of support from no one, emotional or otherwise, is reinforced by society at large nigh constantly. As such, we tend to isolate from one another, as forming a group from which we exteact support would imply that we're "not good enough" to stand on our own. Note that such gendered in…

He's either trolling or a nutter, but it is interesting that the above "argument" mirrors the same calls to action I've heard from feminist spaces.

The nature of their discussion is not congruent with the model of masculinity within Japan, and the fact that they aren't actively pursuing relationships and starting a family directly contradict the traditional masculine scripts. Therefore, their behavior is, by definition, not manly as it is said scripts which define manliness.

They've given up attempting to fulfill the expectations that are traditionally placed upon their gender in Japan. So, they host meet ups where they discuss which bakeries in the area have the best strawberry shortcakes instead of worrying about becoming the head of a household.

Because the Herbivore Men in Japan exist.

Dr. K is the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

In some ways, they are more enlightened, but simultaneously (due to their typically higher socioeconomic status that, more of than not, they were born into), they're unaware of the struggles of the working class in America and therefore, unless they're exceptionally perceptive or conduct primary research in the area, have their head up their ass when trying to understand why poor folks would vote for Trump. I don't like the guy and voted against him, but as someone coming from poverty, I underst…

I miss the Colbert Report. It was unironically one if the funniest shows I've seen on TV, and that it seemed to piss O'Reilly off made me love it even more. Now, his humor feels really hack-y. He just mindlessly participates in the pop-left-wing circle jerk that exists solely to make white Yuppies feel like they're making a difference while shopping at Whole Foods. I'm saying this as a liberal.

Honestly, it would be easy to speak to a lot of men's troubles right now visa vi acknowledging how a bad economy (high CoL, low wages) hurts particularly men due to our gender role as the breadwinner, and thus it would be pretty easy to integrate it into the larger discussion on fixing the economy

It's an uphill battle up an incredibly steep hill, but yes you can, although many of the women who'll be "attracted" to you don't have many other options (i.e. have type B personality disorders, in my experience).

It's not unrealistic, but can feel unobtainable if you're on the spectrum (failure to recognize social norms will induce the ick, and one's mask will slip given enough time). Wasn't surprised that I share similar neurobiology with a lot of the incel community.

Originally, I thought that I should build a friendship with a woman that I was interested in dating and attempt to make that into something more. I was told that approach was a bad idea and in my personal experience, it was. The girls just wanted a friend, and I kept wanting more because I cannot kill attraction; I am unsure of other men can, bit for me there's no voluntary component to it. I instead was advised to make my interests and intent known from the get-go, that way 1.) I'm being both h…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
