Stating our needs and desires isn't "mental effort" unless what we're really trying to do is deduce our partner's needs and claim them as our own before our partner has stated them. That's not only impossible, but leads to resentment on both sides - he didn't ask me where I thought he wanted to eat, so why am I giving him guff for not telling me where he wants to eat?
