I think you're right about breaking even eventually and then of course saving money from then on, but it's a lot easier to accept a $350-400/mo payment for a gas vehicle than a $700/mo one for a similar EV even if over the course of 7 years the overall costs work out to $900/mo vs $800/mo respectively which would mean an $8400 savings on the EV side. However, compared to my wife’s Highlander SE purchased last year, the model Y with AWD and no other features added is about $10k more (after tax credit) and only about 80% as big. Going up to the model X to compete on size results in a $30k difference just for absolute base model, which simply isn’t a viable alternative.
