I was pointing out that public defenders don't make a "buttload" of money to do what they do. I don't expect you to have pity, and I wasn't asking you to. I'm not a public defender myself, no. I'm just very close to one. You've brought up an excellent point, and I appreciate you linking those articles. I suppose I suffer from a very severe case of confirmation bias. "The PD I know and the people they work with aren't this way, so none of them are!"

I totally agree that the excuse of burn out is indeed bullshit. I wasn't arguing that it was a viable excuse, I was simply pointing out why these things happen. Most public defenders, at least in my area, don't make over 35k annually, especially when you factor in student loans from law school. Meanwhile they're often working 60+ hour weeks. This isn't entirely true. They're trained to get the best result for their client, which most of the times comes in the form of a deal. A good attorney will attempt get a good plea deal before going to trial because trials are almost nearly never won. Being a defense attorney is an uphill battle in and of itself; imagine not being able to pick and choose your clientele.
