I wasn't arguing that it was a viable excuse, I was simply pointing out why these things happen. Most public defenders, at least in my area, don't make over 35k annually, especially when you factor in student loans from law school. Meanwhile they're often working 60+ hour weeks. They're trained to get the best result for their client, which most of the times comes in the form of a deal. A good attorney will attempt get a good plea deal before going to trial because trials are almost nearly never won. Being a defense attorney is an uphill battle in and of itself; imagine not being able to pick and choose your clientele.
