Thats a good point, and actually supported by current literature. Attractiveness and likelihood to be perceived of as kind/intelligent etc. are positively correlated. Its also true that first impressions last much longer than they should. I guess its just kind of a shitty situation. On the plus side, its probably not worth being interested in people who judge character based on looks. There are plenty of people who are disillusioned by that initial attractiveness.

I think the way you value those traits of kindness and ambition comes across as a little backwards. Kindness and ambition are things that, after having had a partner for a while, you begin to truly appreciate. If someone isn't genuinely kind, it may be difficult to notice that at first. So, conversely, those subjective desires such as charm, a certain gait, or other physical qualities, may be what initially attracts you; but thats not what anyone sticks around for.
