As much as it bothers you, please don't attempt to censor them. Offer alternate viewpoints, debate them, post your own stuff, but don't censor them. Just because some feminists have used dirty tactics to silence MRAs doesn't mean that you should allow yourself to descend to their level. Easiest solution would be to put up a Men's Rights poster right next to it.

The Men's Rights activists are not participating in a feminist project, and they regularly state that they are outright opposed to feminism. I've witnessed Men's Rights activists regularly appropriate the struggles of gay men and men of color. I've seen them lay forth the claim that feminism is the true source of racism and homophobia. That's exactly what's said in the link. Complaining that MRAs are discussing the issues of men who aren't straight or white is... I'm not even sure what to call t…

You don't see the problem with saying that Men's Rights discussing the issues gay men and men of color face is appropriation? How do you justify that? Why should MRAs not be allowed to discuss the issues minority men face?

I'm pretty sure "Stop pretending gay men and men of color are men! Obviously they belong to the feminist movement because they're really women!" was intended to be sarcastic, not a literal quote from feminists. What I'm assuming 5th_Law is referring to is the fact that feminists do advocate for LGBT rights (and I've got no issue with that), but the idea that men talking about the issues gay men and men of colour face is "appropriation" is ridiculous.

The clarification was helpful, because to someone who's used to having discrimination against their gender ignored, your previous post could easily be taken as "Well our issues were/are worse!" Comparisons like the one you provided can be useful to showcase the similarity between issues men and women suffer. If someone argues that bias against men in car insurance should be allowed, ask them whether they think bias against women in health insurance should be allowed. It's the exact same logic, a…

Everything about her is over the top. She's got pistols for high heels! But her design works. She's not a powerful female character with tacked on sexiness, she's full on "I am sexy and powerful, I'll kick your ass and look hot doing it." That's just as valid a character design as any other. And if you could provide a source for her being designed as a flanderization of sexy female characters, I'd love to read it.

As someone who loves playing Ivy in Soul Calibur, I actually have this issue a lot. I like her backstory, I LOVE her weapon, but her attire makes so little sense in comparison to who we're told she is. I almost always run her alternate outfits instead of the default, since they tend to be more elegant and fitting for her character. I've got no problem with sexy character design as long as said sexiness makes sense for the character and world in question. No issues with Bayonetta, the entire conc…

I'd love to know where she acquired her 9% figure. Because the wording of where-ever she got it is important. "Only 9% of editors are females" is substantially different from "Only 9% of editors identify as females". The vast majority of the sites I go on, I don't identify my gender, because there's absolutely no reason for them to know it. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a lot of other people, male and female, that do the same. I mean, yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if the ratio was still onl…

That's why this debate is so difficult to have. Most of us are advocating what you've described in the second paragraph, but the majority people we debate with only hear us saying what you said the OP sounds like. MRAs do not want to remove a woman's ability to decide on an abortion. They just want men to be able to have a similar option so that they are not forced to take responsibility for the choice that the woman makes. If she wants to carry it to term and keep it, sure! But she should not b…

I completely agree with you there. I know of no legitimate medical reason to ever circumcise newborns.

The circumstances where infant circumcision is actually medically needed are likely infinitely rare, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it's never needed. I really can't imagine offhand what would bring such a situation about, but then again, I'm not an expert on everything that can happen to a child's penis that would require medical intervention. I fully oppose any attempts to circumcise infants for cultural/religious reasons (recently convinced my brother and sister-in-law not to circumcise t…

We have absolutely no sense of context for what's going on in this video, at all. Without knowing the circumstances behind the tattoo, we're in no position to judge. It may be a medical tattoo. Heck, the kid may have asked for it, and is crying because, well, it hurts. Or maybe there's some other legitimate reason I haven't thought of. Maybe not. But the point is, we don't know. And the connection between circumcision and tattooing is... weak. IF the tattoo was forced on the boy and IF it wasn't…

/r/MensRights30/01/13 05:37 PM

Suffer what, exactly? You do realise that there are plenty of uncut men who are perfectly happy? And there's a difference between a procedure that's medically necessary and one that's culturally enforced. Circumcision can be the former, but it is usually the latter. It's cultural circumcision that's the issue. I don't think anyone is actually advocating preventing people from performing medical procedures on children when it's actually needed.

Unless they're refunded the money if the accused is proved guilty, that seems like it would have a horrid impact on reporting in lower income brackets. Heck, it still doesn't seem like that great of an idea. I'm 100% thinking that false accusations should carry an automatic penalty, but charging someone for reporting a crime seems like a bad way to go. Edit: Apparently I derped while reading: ... would make the false rape accuser pay ... Complaint withdrawn.

They've never really gone away, but they've become a lot less frequent and serious since I removed some of the major stresses in my life (coming out, leaving my hellhole job, couple others). I've lived with depression all my life (some really close people to me have had depression as long as I've known them), so I've developed some good coping strategies. Man, I remember the day I learned that thinking about killing yourself wasn't something everyone did. I only did so occasionally (and rarely 'seriously'), but I remember the shock I felt when the person I was talking to said that she'd never thought of killing herself. 0_o They're categories. Masc and fem are constructs with biological and social influences. They can't be measured, quantified, and nobody will ever agree on a set definition of either of them. In ancient times (Greece, for example) men would routinely have sex with each other for pleasure, and with women for procreation. That was what 'masculine' was back then. Do you think that definition of masculinity can be applied to North American culture? Also, fun fact. Other languages can consider colou…

Revoran's suggestion was that a paternity test is required if the alleged father refuses to sign the birth certificate. Which, personally, I think is a great suggestion. If he wants his name on it, no problem, no test. If he contests fatherhood, he's gonna want a paternity test anyway.

While I agree with the essense of your post, I don't think I've ever heard of or met a feminist that didn't believe in patriarchy/kyiarchy theory. I don't suppose you'd have an example offhand?

Amen to that. I consider myself an MRA, and yes, I'm subscribed to two feminist subreddits. I've been yelled at and called a feminist concern troll for bringing up differences I've had with the majority opinion. Men's Rights, especially as displayed in this subreddit DOES directly disagree with patriarchy theory, which is the core of feminist belief. I don't see how that means we can't work together on certain common grounds, but the two are not, in the strictest sense, compatible with each other.

Ah, that makes a lot more sense. Upvote for the precise explanation. And I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm trying to subdue any criticism of feminism. I'm pretty sure they fought for women's suffrage. Unless I'm fully mistaken on what I know of history, I'd consider that a good thing. If you have something that disagrees with that, I'd love to read it. And I understand their history (a lot better thanks to your fuller response above). Feminism has issues. But not every feminist is anti-male, and I see no reason to alienate them instead of discussing with them instead of trying to broaden their view.

B) I'm asking questions and giving responses to why I feel the way I do. You're posting one liners and rejecting everything I say without saying why. Someone's failing at discussion, and it's not me. I get that there's anger. I understand WHY there's anger. But anger should be channeled into something productive instead of just lashing out. Descending to their level isn't going to solve anything. Pointing out where and how feminism has wronged people is good, and should be encouraged. Screaming feminism is evil is just going to make people ignore you. Logic before emotion.

I'm not saying that we should. But the relationship between feminism and men's rights is a lot more complicated then "feminists are evil!" I don't agree with feminist ideology. But declaring war right off the bat just doesn't seem like the proper place to start a meaningful debate. I don't think we should be so upfront angry. Loud and vocal, yes. But when the first thing someone sees when they look us up is us throwing punches, then they're going to assume all we want to do is fight, when they s…

How am I projecting? You started with an insult, not me. If you think calling someone a concern troll ISN'T antagonistic, I'd love to hear your definition. I didn't say diddly about making the change "for feminists". I said that I thought the phrasing would push away feminists and other people who may be sympathetic to men's rights. Nothing was said about making it more palatable for feminists specifically. You can't please everyone, and I don't think we should have to. But people in general are…

Wow dude, antagonistic much? Does everyone who has a difference of opinion than you qualify as a 'concern troll' to you? And to ask your question: I don't know, and I don't pretend to know. The entire purpose of the OP was to point out that I thought the wording may drive away some people who would be interested in Men's Rights. Not everyone responds well to anger. And I'm talking about people in general, not feminists.
/r/MensRights17/12/12 05:55 PM

Except the feminists who aren't interested in discussing and just want to preach are gonna come here and be holier-than-thou anyway. The only people I can imagine this driving away are the ones who are on the fence about seriously discussing male issues. And they're the ones we should be trying to attract, not drive away.

Even assuming what you're saying is true, I'd much rather help focus the sub into what it's supposed to be for than abandoning it to a small faction of vocal extremists. Which, from what I've read since I started lurking here, ARE in the minority. And for the record: I have no problem with feminists. I was responding to your movie idea, nothing else. There's more fans then players in sports, too. It's an analogy, not a 1-1 comparison. Of course there's more civilian then military deaths in war. Where do you think these wars are held? And of course I know what war is about. It's a lot of people getting traumatized, maimed, and killed because a few people decided that their ideologies are more important than other people's lives. While I do agree that the usage of the word has grown... you're acting like gay people stole the word from you. People were using it as a insult to LGBT people long before it became a general insult on 4chan. They didn't 'arbitrarily decide' that the word offended them. I do agree with this insofar as to say that society as a whole needs to understand the difference between pedophiles and child molesters. One is an orientation, in which the person afflicted likely had no choice in the matter, the other is engaging in the sexual assault of prepubescent humans. And until we stop treating pedophiles like monsters, it's going to be impossible for them to come forward for assistance in developing coping strategies for their fixation.

Biological gender is just another variable in the mix. Dating a man over a woman does not promise you a better/easier time. There ARE certain social differences, but I'd say the benefits are about equal to the negatives. A man can be just as shitty of a person as a woman can be, and vis versa.

If someone I wasn't seriously (key word here) dating grabbed my penis in public (male or female) I'd probably deck them. If you're gonna sexually assault me I'm gonna make damn sure you regret it.

Um... you realise that that's an ongoing plotline in the comic strip, right? Not even mentioning that she's a devil girl, and being appealing to men is literally her job. stopaclock isn't saying that men should just stop working dangerous jobs. They're just saying that if women started working in these jobs in equal numbers, then the amount of MEN who die doing these jobs would go down simply because there would be a smaller percentage of them working in said jobs. At least that's how I read it. Although I do agree with you that the only thing actually stopping women from working in these jobs are women themselves.
