Hickam (who is the main character in the movie "October Sky") stepped in when NASA withdrew the internship. He knew she was excited and stupid and had the offer restored. Actually it wasn't ruined. NASA withdrew the internship offer, but Hickam intervened to reinstate it. He didn't want her to suffer for being a young and stupid idiot. He got some breaks as a young boy from coal country and would rather she learn a lesson than be punished. Hope she learned a lesson and grew up a bit.

I'm not blaming the cop--He used good judgement. She was foolish and appeared an imminent threat, even though she was not.
