Both fail or succeed a marriage. The issue I have is while both fail, she gets paid well for her failures while he is harshly punished. Good men get punished and terrible wives rewarded.

I would disagree. While the act may be seen as noble, it has only enabled the sleazy wife. The longer she is married the more cash she gets to take from him. Staying for the kids is not noble. Staying only took years from this poor guy, and probably has shortened his life expectancy.
