My ex wife got re-married nine months after our divorce when the reality of paying rent and holding down a job got a little too real after 13-years of being a “stay at home” wife/mother. And by “stay at home” I mean sleeping until noon and screaming at me because it’s “needy and demanding” to expect her to housework or cook, or take our son to school.

My grandfather, married for 52 years to the same woman once said he hoped there was no afterlife because he didn’t want to see his wife again. This wasn’t a joke or sarcastic wit.

Not totally dissimilar to my situation. That ring went on her finger and all the sudden she had zero interest in sex vs. when she was dating she was DTF 24/7. Just more proof marriage is a scam.

I didn’t date for almost 2 years after my divorce, then discovered the dating pool for 30-45 year old women is just utter and complete trash. “I’m unemployed, dropped out of college freshmen year, and my dad pays my rent” became such a common first date story my best friend started to make fun of me. It’s just how it goes. It’s like trying to pick out the best turd from a construction port-a-potty.

My ex wasn’t really interested in being a hands on mother post divorce. Holidays and FaceTime on birthday, that’s about as involved as she wanted to be.

Jesus dude… what do you do for a living they came up with that amount? Originally they were going to hit my ex wife with $600/mo in child support but I agreed to a reduction to $475 in exchange for her giving up most visitation. And that $600 was based on her making $100k working in tech, a job which predictably she didn’t hold onto for more than nine months because she’s never held onto a job for more than nine months in her adult life. But she was making $100k and was only going to be on the h…

She knows there’s money to be made off a divorce. Many states have passed alimony reform laws that require a marriage to last 20 years for the woman to be eligible for alimony. Holy shit the look on my ex wife’s face when the judge told her she didn’t qualify for alimony because we were only together for 13 years and I paid for her college education was pure horror. She thought that it was open and closed that she was going to get alimony.

100% this. Don’t hook up with your ex. This has never ever worked out well. It’s easy to fall into old patterns but divorce is just that. Hell the best thing that happened in my divorce is we ended up 2,200 miles from each other.

Got mine at 39 after I signed the divorce papers. It was an excellent decision. I have one son who is healthy and happy and since I’m 99.9% I’ll never get married again getting snipped made a lot of sense.

I started dating after my divorce I found my standard were impossibly high. I was 39 when we signed the papers and started looking at women 30-45 years old and my requirements were - 1) has $40 to their name 2) can walk up a normal ass flight of stairs and not got winded 3) your dad/brother/ex-husband isn’t paying your rent. Those three things knocked out 95% of age appropriate women. Dating in your 30s and 40s really is just a disaster. So I kind of just learned to fly on solo mode. Lift heavy …

Whole lot of stuff came out during the divorce that I’d tried to talk to people about before hand and just got told “she just feels things more intensely” or “have you tried not setting her off” or my personal favorite “man up”. After the divorce when all the evidence had been gathered and presented I had a couple of folks who came to me and went “damn, we didn’t know all the stuff you said was happening was actually happening. We thought you were just being dramatic”.

Meh. It was the exact opposite for me, my ex wife wasn’t a bad looking woman but she had the interpersonal skills of a dead raccoon. She brought up the idea of an “open marriage” when things started going badly and the fact I was able to find a stable girlfriend fairly easily and she never got a second date really just hastened the end of our marriage. It’s been the same post divorce I’ve been seeing someone on a causal but regular basis why my ex wife still hasn’t had a second date.

This is what happened when I divorced. My ex had been a stay at home mom the whole time we were married and went full shocked Pikachu when I got custody of our son and she had to self support. She kept going to the court saying she needed alimony so she could get an apartment and the court kept telling her “you’re a single woman now. You need to self support.” Apparently she was under the impression that divorce meant that that money kept flowing in but she just didn’t have to interact with me a…

So here’s the sad part, JAG does very little to help the service members in a divorce case. Nuke your social media, start thinking about custody post divorce and what you want that to look like, save any text messages you have, and think of anyone who can write a statement on your behalf.

I talk to so many guys and hear this. They would have kept trying to fix and fix and fix their relationship even though they’re the one putting in 99% of the effort and if they’d just pulled the handle and ejected sooner they could have avoided most of their suffering. I kept trying to get us into therpy again and again and in the end she ended up releasing our therpy records to her friends and family as “proof” that I was crazy and I was still trying to fix our marriage.
/r/Divorce_Men25/08/22 04:08 PM
10

The worst part for me is I would have kept trying to “fix” my marriage for all of eternity rather than admitting that she just… didn’t… care… and she wasn’t interested in fixing anything if she hadn’t been the one to file. Life lesson from my divorce: it’s not my responsibility to be the only one to care & it’s OK to bail out sometimes. You don’t have to ride every flaming heap into the ground; sometimes you just need to bail out.

I had a good life. I had a job that paid decent and was really undemanding, a nice home, and my son was in outstanding schools. My ex wife didn’t have to work. And it all got blown up, gone, because me expecting her to get up before noon to get our son to school or putting her dirty dishes in the sink was me being “needy and demanding” and she found me expecting her to cook or do laundry “demeaning”.

Yeah I get that. I had a real nice 3/2 with a finished basement in the burbs’. Gone. Varies from state to state. Iowa where I divorced effectively doesn’t have alimony for life; there are some minor and very specific examples like if your ex is totally and completely disabled. Rehabilitative alimony which is generally 12-24 mo for the ex to get skills training to get back into the job market is the norm. Now, Florida where I’m from alimony for life is absolutely a thing. In fact when there’s been attempts to end alimony for life women’s groups in Florida have rallied to keep it …

This of course being the correct answer. Alimony varies widely from state to state. Iowa where my divorce was limits alimony pretty severely. She can get temp alimony, normally a year or two for job training and beyond that the only way to get more is for her to be permanently disabled or the marriage to have lasted 20+ years. That was a rude awakening for a lot of ex wives who think they’ve got a life long pay day coming. Florida where I’m originally from the alimony laws where at at least when…

I don’t think my ex was interested in ending it, she wanted her self-replenishing ATM to keep going but she also didn’t want to you know… have to actually interact with me ever. A marriage can only be saved when both people want to save it. When one tries and the other just sees their patenter as a self-transporting bank account the relationship is beyond redemption.
/r/Divorce_Men24/04/22 11:23 PM
11

No. Mine was beyond saving, not that I didn’t try. Three different couples therapist, read all the books, reached out to friends and family, it was trying to save the titanic. But in the end I’m glad I put in the effort to save my marriage i did rather than just quitting.

The issue I’ve witness in my own life is this, by the time most people (myself included) start couples therpy the damage is already done. It also only works if both people are equally committed. It’s like if you only start bailing water after you’re in the life boat or if only half the people help bail. In the end… DONT GET MARRIED

My ex did this to me during our divorce process. I had custody of our son as she’d fucked off to Florida to live on the beach and “live, laugh, love” and after the courts denied her alimony request for 50% of my income in perpetuity she started sending child services after me saying she witnessed abuse of our son during her three times a week FaceTime with the kiddo. I offered my wife $10k and joint custody up front when she asked for a divorce if she would surrender her claim against my classic car and retirement fund, which back then wasn’t worth that much. She said no because she wanted more to include $1500 a mo in alimony and the car so she could take it to the crusher. So we went to court where she showed who she really was and she walked away with virtually nothing. Edit: my favorite part was in addition to the alimony her asking for child support eve…

Oh yeah it’s all under her name, we’ve been divorced for over a year now and she lives 2,000 miles away. She just does it to be petty and tries to guilt me into paying them for her. Which again just proves what I told her when we were in couples therapy, she couldn’t function as an adult for even the simplest things like paying utilities.
/r/Divorce_Men25/01/22 03:30 PM

My ex wife has done this, she sends all of unpaid utility bills to me. As if somehow I’m going to pay her bills and that doesn’t prove one of the reasons we divorced, her inability to function in the simplest ways as an adult.

My ex tried to make me feel bad all through our process but within a year of us divorcing I’d lost 15lb, was on 1/4 of the mood stabilizers I had been, got moved from twice a week individual therpy to once a week group, and my blood pressure dropped 20pts. Being married was literally killing me. She’ll try to make everything your fault but it never is.

It is however it is almost never actually prosecuted. The burden of proof for adultery is much higher than most crimes. I wouldn’t bet on her chain of command pressing that. I never actually witnessed that during my 20-years. Delete your social media, lawyer up, hit the gym. I’d also say you need to get some space so either kick her out or you should be able to get temp on-base housing for yourself.

Save copies of everything from the joint account. One of the reasons I got divorced was financial abuse. We lost our house because the $1,200 a month I was giving my wife to pay the mortgage because “I want to feel like I’m involved in the household finances” was all being spent buying random shit off Amazon. They never do. So one of the reasons we divorced was $32,000 in missing mortgage payments that it was later found out she had used to go shopping on Amazon with. I worked out a deed in lieu agreement with the bank to where we would just sing the house over to the bank, we make nothing but we lose nothing on the home. She refused to sign. Just to be petty. The woman I married: loves to fuck, does cosplay, is an atheist, and because she grew up poor pinches a penny. The woman I divorce: identifies as asexual, will literally not leave the house for weeks at a time, “found god”, and our house was foreclosed because she was spending $1,400 a month on Amazon with the money each month I gave her to pay the mortgage. Yeah. Marriage. Totally not worth it. It’s an arcane concept from a bygone era.

All I can tell you is living two time zones away from my ex has been a life saver. I had a pretty rough marriage and even more difficult divorce so there is no affinity between my ex and I especially after the courts gave me sole custody because she’s in fact insane. Sure you might think I'm kind of boring but I got that way keeping the lights on and food on the table. Besides, if you're leaving a man for boredom maybe you should look in the mirror and ask yourself how'd he get that way?

You're not alone I genuinely have no idea what the hell he is ranting about. It read more like someone's poorly written blog more than a professional work.

This is quite literally the most ignorant thing I've ever seen and I'm in college where most of our professors are borderline retarded.

Well, that's disappointing. Permanent alimony is an outdated concept which goes back to the era when women were completely dependent on men, when they couldn't hold down jobs and support themselves. It is now the 21st-Century and just like the 'rule of thumb' is an antiquated idea so is permanent financial life-support.

I'm an Army vet and it's sad to say this is a disturbingly common story. So far as Reddit goes, I'd subscribe to r/veterans, there are some resources there and as always look into the VA and VFW they both have a lot of mental health resources. Best of luck brother.

Can I just say I'm gay to get the tuition break or is there a minimum number of gay dates I'd have to go on to get the gay discount?

Yes let's cut breaks for the vets, because as we all know the enlisted ranks of the military are filled with the children of the rich and well-to-do. Honestly the military education programs like GI Bill and tuition assistance are some of the most effective social mobility programs out there in over a veteran's life time the government actually will make money off of these programs from the veteran's higher earning power and higher tax contributions. This is the kind of 'feeling not fact' based …

I'm not a biologist but this really sounds like junk science cloaked in 'girl-power'. Every mammal to exist since the start of the class has been two-gender, unless you're an anthropologist then it's five genders. *Spelling. I not gud wit words.

Like so many feminist I know they are unable to entertain any idea or person who isn't in lock-step with their ideology. Isn't that the whole point of college? To expand and challenge your intellectual horizons?

I was in an infantry company, which was all male, during my four years in the Army. During that time we heard no end of brifings about sexual assault aimed at protecting women, super-double-extra-mega sure you have consent from women but never once was the issue of male-on-male rape addresses dispite the fact that we all knew it was happening inside our own organization. Male on male rape was treated as almost, well it's your fault as a man for letting it happen to you. Men, soldiers don't get r…

For the same reason I never once witnessed the Army address male-on-male rape in the four years I was in despite the fact in deployed situations that is by far the most common kind of rape that happens.

This kind of attitude is exactly why I love being married, dating sucks. Women with this attitude is what has changed dating from a fun process of finding you mate to a traumatic period of getting kicked when you're down.

Yeah I had exactly this happen to me in college. It's scary, she says yes all night (three times) then a week later says she didn't really mean it and now its rape. Luckily for me she never acted on this other than just telling everyone she was raped. Edit: This ability to retroactively withdraw consent and the fact that it seems to be treated as legally justifiable baffles me.

Yeah I've seen this happen in college. Boyfriend walks in on girlfriend asleep in bed with another dude after a night out and she screams rape. To my knowledge not too many women overnight in a dorm room with three other women sharing a common area with their rapist.
