+1 for Dalrock. I like RoK and Heartiste, I just think they take a more nihilistic moral view which doesn't always sit right with me. I was raised in a Christian household and while gave up my belief in the Church, I completely understand and have seen the benefits of living in a religious household. Dalrock's morality sets him apart from the others and it definitely should be one that you read consistently.

To contrast 1984 I would read Brave New World. Instead of Orwell's Big Brother, gratification is the defining characteristic. Mother's and Fathers are a thing of the past, sex is trivialized, and society exists within certain specific castes, determined from birth. I would say its more accurately represents the road our society is taking nowadays. Action without consequences, loss of gender roles, marginalization of the self; these are all things we face in our liberal progressive world today.

As an American who went to uni in the UK, I'm glad I never had to worry about the university busting my balls for letting people underage drink (I was 23 when I started). People respect you because they look up to you and want to emulate you. This is why we commonly use the term "earn someones respect". Incentivizing your peers to act in your favor comes from their own desire. You have to frame your requests in a way which is advantageous for them. I would highly recommend reading "How to Win Friends and Influence People" to understand the basics of this.
