Current rutgers student here, there are classes intended for people that are just trying to fulfill general education requirements. Someone who isn’t majoring in philosophy just takes the intro course, which is easy enough that you don’t really need to show up to lecture or do anything besides skim the material. A lot of kids have at least some AP classes transferred in which fills some requirements as well. No one I know has actually talked about picking non-major related classes they’re intere…

That’s actually a good point, it’s impossible for them to know how others feel so they focus on what they feel.

They exist my guy, go literally anywhere else on reddit and you'll be lucky to make someone say a guy has to be somewhat attractive. A lot of the mainstream dating subs especially spew some weird rhetoric.

I'm not saying that it doesn't increase your confidence, I'm saying that you shouldn't attribute all positive effects to only something personality-based like confidence. It's both unhelpful and misleading to focus only on the personality effects of a positive change like losing weight because it gives the impression that your personality is all that matters.

Eh, this is a stance I see a lot on the internet but I still see it in real life sometimes. My point was less about socially acceptable things like looks, but more about things people don't believe will help like money or status for example. When some people experience that change themselves and then subsequently experience a change in how women treat them, many will just attribute the increased attraction to things they already believe like confidence/personality rather than admitting that some…

It's like a reverse halo effect. There's been a lot of studies that show women rate men's attractiveness higher if they have a good career. For a personal anecdote, I've known guys who have gotten increased attention after revealing they have a typical high status/income white collar job (medicine, law, finance) and that was in environments where people were pretty clear on their intentions of casual sex.

I don't think this is at the extremes though. If you look at any thread in more mainstream subreddits that ask how people have been treated differently after certain changes, the top comments are dominated by people remarking on how the effects are actually because of the fact their personality has changed, not directly because of the other changes in their lives.

I think looks and status mattering is something ingrained in us, ignoring that won't change what people look for. Instead it'll just lead to resentment when people realize what they've been told isn't true.

I'm responding to comments now because I had to go eat lunch.

In a more discrete world like that, some people might get the gist of what's being unsaid but a good chunk wouldn't, and would fail because of it. A lack of transparency is what leads to the disillusionment and resentment that fuels a lot of manosphere types.

I'd agree that it's easy for someone to come to the conclusion that it's just the effect of the increased confidence, but I just think it's unhelpful and misleading to ignore the direct benefits of working out because it gives the impression that you can "skip the middle man." Of course it's not just the looks, but if you have the confidence and attitude of someone who works out but not the physique you're not going to have the same outcome. That was kind of common sense, but the main point I'm …

Yes, I think despite not having a change in personality, the weight loss itself would make him more attractive. I'm not saying a change in personality doesn't matter, but instead that it's unhelpful to ignore the fact that change itself would benefit you.

I'm not saying that being successful/fit means that you're automatically guaranteed success, or that you don't need to have a good personality, but I am saying that people too often deny that some things will make you more attractive to most people, even without taking into account the positive effects on your personality.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
