Everything here has come entirely from within your own head, right from the very first statement, and if I knew you, I’d actually be quite concerned for you. I would like to tell you about my situation because I’d like to know how I fit into the world as you see it. I have been single parent to a now 17 yo girl (B) for close to 3 years. Her mother dumped her on my doorstep (for the second time) when she could no longer cope with the serious mental health issues B was suffering at the time. Over …

Why should he pay child support if he does not want to keep the baby? Let’s imagine an unplanned pregnancy occurs. We won’t blame anyone. It’s no one’s fault. Or we can say it’s both party’s fault equally. In most jurisdictions: 1) If the man wants to keep the baby and the woman does not, she can have an abortion and he has no say in the matter While at the same time: 2) If the woman wants to keep the baby and the man does not, he has no saying in the matter, yet he is obliged to pay financial s…

I’m chiming in late here because it needs to be called out: you are a sleazy operator, and I want other people to have the vocabulary necessary to call you out on your sophistry. First, you strawman the conversation (people, this is called a straw man, it’s not gaslighting) by presenting an oversimplified, demented summary of what the person said, and then put him in a position where he had to defend THAT, rather than what he actually said, to continue the conversation. He needs to take some of …

Describing an individual as “questionable” over such a thing is silly, but it shouldn’t be dismissed either. I’m 47 now and one of the few maxims I have found to be true in life is that “the best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour”. It’s not perfect, but it’s still the best one. In this case, if a 31 year old woman’s romantic history doesn’t include a long-term relationship, and instead comprises relationships that last no longer than 3 months, why would I assume that it will be dif…

I‘m a 47 yo man and I have always been a bit annoyed by this pervasive presumption that my entire life is ruled by sex and my craving for sex. It isn’t. This is a stereotype perpetuated by both genders for their own ends, and it’s harmful, not least because it’s not true. I have only ever had, and will only ever have, sex with a woman when it is a mutual exchange of attraction, affection and sexual energy. Being with a woman who wants to have sex with me for no other reason than that she is very…

Good question. Probably both. I’d say these two things very often come together in the one package. People who are indecisive probably use silly games and strategies to string things along as slowly and as long as possible with any one individual so that they don’t have to make a hard decision. And those people who for whatever reason feel a need to use “strategies” (i.e. manipulation) in their interpersonal relationships instead of just showing up as their authentic and best selves are unavoida…

I agree. I’m 47 and have developed and demonstrated an enormous capacity for dealing with all kinds of people and social situations, and I was married for 17 years, and I feel that even I myself cannot get to know someone well if I’m dealing with too many other people and things at the same time. Yet, I run into quite a number of airheads with the attention span of a newt, whose longest relationship is 6 months, who seem to believe for some reason, against all evidence to the contrary, not only …

Interesting observation. This is exactly the same logic behind the “women end up dating the same small pool of attractive guys who are non-committal because they have so many options” observation. I don’t necessarily believe these two things, but your thinking is clever. (FWIW I think that, like most of these sweeping généralisations, there is some truth to them, but nowhere near as much as the people-who-would-do-better-if-their-attitude-were-better types make out)

I’m 47. I was married 26-43 and have dated on both sides of it, with 26-39 being the age range I have dated since my divorce. Gender roles in dating is an area where some people can hold such obviously dissonant and hypocritical thoughts in their head that I’m honestly just amazed that their head doesn’t explode. I have the means to do it and I don’t mind the “traditional” way so it more bemuses me than anything else, and it can be a bit of fun too. I also want to acknowledge that there are plen…

Thanks for your perspective. It’s interesting. Notwithstanding, I do have the experience to know how women who are attracted to me typically respond to me - and my generalisation is about that, not about the women themselves. Of course, it’s not perfect, and it’s not super rigid, and often it’s the women who surprise me by not behaving in keeping with my experience that are the most interesting and intriguing to me. Please notice that I said that after a certain time has elapsed I “need an expla…

Say what? No. I seem to have hit a nerve. Again, unintentionally. Can you please explain to me how you came to that conclusion as I have no idea. I was trying to apologise without actually apologising, as i didn’t feel was warranted because I didn’t do it on purpose.

Ok. Didn’t do anything intentionally offensive.

Fair. I realise I’m speaking for myself a bit here. I’ve never thought of a woman as “easy” in my life, I just don’t think that way. I have probably let a few women down by not being as interested as they hoped but this was never deliberate. Now I’m older (47) i only have sex with women I’m really into. As a consequence I’ve had sex with exactly one woman in the last three years. It’s a tough one though because my last point stands. I do not view sex as something a woman is “giving me”. It is a …

OK. But you need to understand that other sentient beings do not operate according to your needs. They have their own thoughts and feelings and operate according to theirs. Frequently these needs don’t match and sometimes they are actually opposed. Fully understanding and accepting this is hard but is, in my opinion, the single biggest part of navigating interpersonal relationships. Obviously I wasn’t there, but in this case you seem to have determined (in your anxious state of mind) that your n…

OP, this person appears wise. I think what you’ve described can be explained by a combination of inexperience, immaturity and anxiety. That said, counseling can help with these things. Reading what you’ve written, I would have assumed you are 20 or so. This is a problem. You won’t be able to distinguish the good men from the bad ones and the simply useless ones. It will prevent you from partnering with the best men, and make you a target for the unscrupulous ones, and after a string of the latte…

No, this is too cut and dry and incorrect. Men who are experienced with women know the difference between a woman who is “easy” and a woman who is highly attracted and feels a connection. If I also feel that connection, then I would not consider that woman as “easy”. Completely different. If a man is experienced with women he really doesn’t think on those terms. He’s accustomed to women find him attractive and wanting to have sex with him. It’s no big deal. In fact, these are the men you will LO…

That’s exactly what I think. I’d assume she’s made it up as a pretext to confront me. I’ve just been on the receiving end of this kind of behaviour so many times that I know it when I see it. If it’s not pregnancy it’s some other odd emergency that requires of me a disproportionate investment of my time and energy given how long I’ve known the woman. I’d consider this a form of testing, of game playing.

I think i went through a similar thing about a year ago with a much younger woman (I’m 47). It ended with her blowing it up and then ghosting me though. This is how I felt when I received the very weird text message that triggered it: baffled, confused, disappointed and a bit insulted. Hurt too (I am human after all). If it’s helpful, then based on what I went through (which, be warned, does involve a fair bit of speculation on my part) I think: yes, your behaviour has put him off I doubt he thi…

I agree. A week is too long by anyone’s standard. I’d feel bad if my partner didn’t feel a need to reach out within a week. I’m actually quite a sensitive being. Believe it or not. In this situation, I personally would set expectations up front. When I left for my trip, I’d say “I’m going away for work, I will call you on Tuesday” and then actually do it, for as long as you want, and enjoy it. Would that meet your expectations? If so, we’d be compatible Sheesh, it’s like we’re having an adult co…

Thanks for the opportunity to rant. I’ll try to just stick to facts. I’m 47. I’ve worked hard my whole life. Top 1% education. Top 10-15% income. Not much wealth but nobody can know that and relative to the women I date I’m sure I’m fine. Was married 17 years. Divorced 4 years. One 17-yo daughter. Open to having more children if the right woman came along. 175 cm (5’9), 85 kg (185 lbs). I posted a picture in r/bodybuilding and was told my physique would be in the top 1% of men my age. I have all…

No problem. I actually did say originally that a week is too long by any standard and I think he can do better than that but I see I must have accidentally deleted that part before posting. It’s also been pointed out to me that using the word “lucky” here doesn’t come across well and I agree so I apologise for that, a better way to say it would have been that I think that what you have currently is not terribly unusual for a certain kind of man. I responded in some length to another response to …

“Lucky” was a poor choice of word so I apologise for that. I have a 17 year old daughter so I have some idea of how things are these days. I was married for 17 years too. I manage highly educated millennials. Now I’m single. I’ve dated and had relationships before the internet and text messaging, and after. Like most things, the best was somewhere in the middle. You may expect a guy in his early 30s to behave like that, and he may indeed behave like that to meet your expectations, but I don’t th…

Those “influencers” are a symptom not a cause. Yes, it’s worrisome that there are young men out there who are apparently so bereft of good male role models that they turn to an obnoxious grafting charlatan pimp on the internet for advice on how to be a man. They are also nowhere near as influential or successful as they’re made out to be. They are all complete tools and are not taken seriously by anyone over 18 and outside the internet. Their 15 minutes will be up soon. I saw the Fresh n Fit too…

I’m a 47 year old man. Since my 17 year marriage ended 4 years ago, I’ve dated women 26-39. For me, texting is for simple things, like “I’ll be 10 minutes late”. The idea of having lengthy conversations by text is bizarre to me. I don’t get much reward from it and I’ll admit that I tend to view excessive texting as a rather feminine trait. When I see men doing it I tend to think they must have too much time on their hands (judgmental, probably unfair, I know). What I do like is seeing people in …

I agree that most men’s experience on dating apps probably sucks but my dude, nobody can be disingenuous and manipulative towards you without your permission…especially when you know they have a tendency to do that. This is why, as someone pointed out above and which I agree with from person experience, you ask for a phone number and to meet IRL within 5-6 messages each over 1-2 days max. For me, every single woman who has agreed to meet and actually shown up has followed this pattern; and every…
