If you're going to come in here and proclaim that the guy should have been let off death row because he's actually innocent, it's not "well acshually shit" to start debating the truth of your premise. If you're here to argue against the death penalty in general, then I'm 100% on board. The state should not have that kind of power over people. But trying to tie that position to his supposed innocence muddies that entire conversation, as you have experienced.

I agree that the death penalty is not a good thing. What I don't agree with is the idea that it's okay to lie about cases where it's invoked to try and argue against it. It poisons our side of the debate and provides a free wedge for the other side to dismiss our more legitimate points.

I love that SSC article. And it's pseudo-follow-up Untitled. And I hate that they're both still relevant almost a decade later.

Here's the issue. Let's say that your "base chances" of success are 10%, and that by "working hard" you can up that to 15-20%. That's not nothing, and it's something that you should definitely do. But now consider that there are a bunch of other people out there who also have a 10-20% chance of success, and that addressing the barriers to success that everyone faces, we can get everyone's chances up to 70%. And then working hard on top of that gets you to 75-80%. I don't claim that these are the…

The phrase "all else being equal" is doing a whole lot of heavy lifting in that sentence.

Your original point was "men who leave after being rejected were never really trying to be your friend in the first place." Are you pivoting away from that?

That's an assumption on your part. If a man starts out as being genuine friends with a woman, but then develops unreciprocated feelings for her, then remaining in her social circle and having to deal with those feelings every time he sees her is painful as all hell and arguably unhealthy.

Men in the 18-29 age range are nearly twice as likely to be single than their female counterparts. And no, "real life empirical evidence" doesn't count because it's nothing more than a fancy way to say "anecdote."

While it's true that there's a minority of people who believe this nonsense, they are overrepresented in the public discussion. There are a few reasons behind this situation, but I think the biggest one is that the supermajority of people who are against the usage of the term "toxic masculinity" don't hold that opinion particularly strongly, while the minority of people who are in favor of the term see an instance of a particular man being bad and can't stop spouting "toxic masculinity!" on twit…

In the past, I've made the comparison between the term "toxic masculinity" and other terms like "greedy jew" and "dirty mexican." Nobody would try to justify either of the latter two statements with "well, I was only talking about the greedy ones - that's why I added the adjective!" When you put a negative descriptor on a demographic, it comes across as a negative generalization, whether that's your stated intent or otherwise. Of course, when I told this to an SJW former friend of mine, she said…

The sad truth is that relationships are such an emotional aspect of people's lives that we have a huge problem turning off our knee-jerk reactions in conversations about the subject. As a result, the "empathy gap" is extra pronounced when it comes to dating. Obviously, we can't make dating "easy" or "fair," as the whole process fundamentally relies on potential partners making their own personal choice to take part in a relationship with you or not. But given that women can write blog post after…

Ok, so let's think about that argument for a minute. If women are harassed for being women, and men are being harassed for reasons completely unrelated to gender... then why are the reasons completely unrelated to gender primarily affecting one gender? If the only types of harassment are anti-woman and gender-neutral, then we would expect to see men and women being harassed equally for gender-neutral reasons, and women being harassed on top of that for being women. Thus leading to a scenario in …

Well, lord knows I'm not qualified to make an exhaustive list of gender differences. If I'm being honest here, physical strength was the example I was thinking of when I wrote my first comment. And if you try to google things that men are better or more effective at than women, you get a lot of superficial stuff that isn't all that valuable (apparently we're better at processing alcohol?), as well as articles about how women are better than men. But one thing that comes to mind is keeping our he…

On average, men and women have differences. I have no doubt that women are better than us at some things and I take no issue with media outlets reporting information that is factually accurate. I do have a problem if the media reports a difference that isn't there. For example, we occasionally see feminist pieces about how female heads of state would be less likely to wage wars, when the opposite has been true historically. I also have a problem with the double standard - there's no way the main…
