Most of the community are lurkers who don't need an instant messenger for this, but I think, for the more active ones, a chat could be an extra exchange of information. Like sharing pics, ideas etc. Some subreddits have their own Telegram group and they rarely have more than 300 members, but these 300 are very active and contribute a lot to the community.
