It's absolutely acceptable to open with a question about table tennis, but it should not dominate the conversation. OP should use that to break the ice but then talk to her like any regular girl.

/r/malefashionadvice , /r/bodybuilding , /r/personalfinance , /r/theredpill , and /r/lifeprotips are some good ones. It's on you to sift through the garage in each of those, as there is some, but the majority of the content is good. I think you're on the right track- work relationships, even in high school job settings, are a bad idea- but taking the mantra too seriously. jokingly There's your problem. You joked about the issue, making it seem frivolous, instead of talking to him like a man and telling him straight. You don't need to "conceal" your desire to have a good reputation. What you need to do is sit down with him and explain calmly and clearly that within the workplace environment he needs to treat you professionally and in a way that does not put your reputation at risk. If he can't grow up and do that, find a new friend.

If you're not into frivolous texting, just do not engage in it. Don't respond when she tries to check up on you, or take a long time to do so. Then, as /u/TimPartendale said, when you're in person tell her that you don't like texting. She will probably ask you why you don't text her- the hamster starts spinning for most girls when you don't text them back.
