| – | Where's the equality in this? (There isn't)Sure, some situations are more likely to work out in a bad way for men and they're more likely to work out in other bad ways for women. I think that means we can identify two problems: We're not doing a great job of preventing people from ending up in bad life situations resulting from entirely reasonable choices. We could likely improve everyone's well being by taking a more rational, and less emotional, perspective during these difficult situations. We're treating men and women differently. So… | /r/MensRights | 15/02/17 04:52 PM |
| – | Where's the equality in this? (There isn't)I don't claim to know. But I do know that comparing that number for men and women would be a lot more convincing than this terrible meme. The fact that an argument is difficult to make isn't a good excuse for rallying behind a half-assed, inaccurate, argument instead. | /r/MensRights | 15/02/17 04:39 PM |
| – | Where's the equality in this? (There isn't)I'm 100% on board. I think this is a significant problem in our society. But I don't think that blaming women helps at all, if anything it probably distracts from the real problem. Both men and women can be poor and suffer from these same problems. | /r/MensRights | 15/02/17 04:32 PM |
| – | Where's the equality in this? (There isn't)That's undoubtedly true in some situations, but let's not distort the case you're trying to make by claiming it's the most common way that divorces work out. And if we're being accurate we should also keep in mind the rates that men and women choose not to live with their kids/families. | /r/MensRights | 15/02/17 04:31 PM |
| – | Where's the equality in this? (There isn't)The US has the highest incarceration rate (of men) of any first world nation Of anyone. And I agree that's a huge problem, but I don't think the solution is to start locking up women at the same rates as men. Especially since the high rates are overwhelmingly the result of the 'war on drugs', which is a completely different issue. | /r/MensRights | 15/02/17 04:00 PM |
| – | Where's the equality in this? (There isn't)Men are sent to jail if they have babies and can't afford to pay for them and their mothers. Only if they don't live with their family Women, on the other hand, are given benefits and housing. Only if they do live with their family. I agree things aren't fair, but at the very least we should try to be accurate when describing the situation. The easiest way to lose an argument is to overstate your case. If you have a good case, then describe the situation accurately and don't embellish to make it… | /r/MensRights | 15/02/17 03:24 PM |
| – | Audi releases ad campaign based on the wage gap myth, then immediately debunks it with their next tweet. You couldn't make this up!There's simply no proof that this is true. There is data that women to make some different choices, but if they face a different demand for labor curve than men, then different choices would make perfect logical sense. Or to put it another way, if we could prove that men and women faced the same demand for labor curve, then we could be sure that any differences in choices was due to differences in preferences. But we don't know that, and in fact the overwhelming evidence from research over the l… | /r/MensRights | 04/02/17 03:24 AM |
| – | Audi releases ad campaign based on the wage gap myth, then immediately debunks it with their next tweet. You couldn't make this up!It seems people are very willing to down play the effect of discrimination, and possibly even write it off completely as being "merely possible" when it doesn't effect them. It's certainly not an argument that if feel comfortable defending. | /r/MensRights | 03/02/17 06:50 PM |
| – | Audi releases ad campaign based on the wage gap myth, then immediately debunks it with their next tweet. You couldn't make this up!Circular reasoning. This isn't a proof, it's an example of what discrimination would look like, therefore discrimination is assumed. but the closer we come to the present day the studies show less and less of the gap as unexplained Correct, but less is not the same as zero. Everyone in this sub seems to be saying that the unexplained gap is zero, when there's exactly no evidence of that. | /r/MensRights | 03/02/17 06:14 PM |
| – | Audi releases ad campaign based on the wage gap myth, then immediately debunks it with their next tweet. You couldn't make this up!Please forgive me, but if you have all this experience and knowledge of how the gender wage gap is being perpetuated and enforced within your company, why aren't you reporting it? Why would you assume I'm not? I don't think the pay gap is especially bad at my current company, but given the secrecy about compensation that's typical in the US I could be way off. I have any idea of what the people in my immediate group are making, and what the hiring has been like for the past few years. But that e… | /r/MensRights | 03/02/17 04:16 PM |
| – | Audi releases ad campaign based on the wage gap myth, then immediately debunks it with their next tweet. You couldn't make this up!This is called an anecdote, and it's very interesting, but it doesn't contradict the vast amount of research showing a very real wage gap. It's also kind of insulting to assume that you need to explain how hiring works. It seems like you just assume I must have no idea how HR works, or that I've never hired someone. I'd consider that maybe some other people have just as much experience in this as you, and it's partly because of that experience that they've come to their beliefs. | /r/MensRights | 03/02/17 03:54 PM |
| – | Audi releases ad campaign based on the wage gap myth, then immediately debunks it with their next tweet. You couldn't make this up!People have factually refuted No they haven't, that's the point. They've made claims like "if everyone was rational, then this wouldn't happen". There are mountains of research showing a wage gap exists, and a tiny minority of studies showing that when controlling for "all other factors" that the wage gap shrinks to "almost zero". | /r/MensRights | 03/02/17 03:47 PM |
| – | Audi releases ad campaign based on the wage gap myth, then immediately debunks it with their next tweet. You couldn't make this up!This is why men's rights groups never get taken seriously. They are, on average, rabidly against any facts or evidence that doesn't agree with their preconceived idea of what the world is like. If there is a gender pay gap, does that mean that all the issues men's rights groups are fighting for aren't important? Of course not. But it seems like some people want to be the only victims, and they won't even consider that other people might have issues they're fighting for too. In my opinion the bes… | /r/MensRights | 03/02/17 03:33 PM |
| – | Audi releases ad campaign based on the wage gap myth, then immediately debunks it with their next tweet. You couldn't make this up!If the wage gap existed, why wouldn't the profit driven corporations not hire just women, as it would help their bottom line? Let's take this argument, and see if we can find any flaws in it by applying it to situations where we know there was blatant discrimination and see if it holds up. For example, for a long period in modern american history there was a significant wage gap between african american and white workers in the labor market. There's many areas where african american were paid mu… | /r/MensRights | 03/02/17 02:49 PM |
| – | Audi releases ad campaign based on the wage gap myth, then immediately debunks it with their next tweet. You couldn't make this up!The top reply debunks that entire post. The top post assumes that all actors in the labor market are perfectly rational profit seekers. That's the least realistic assumption about people I can think of. There's mountains of research, not to mention everyday observations, showing that that's not true. People aren't perfectly rational, corporations aren't structured well to avoid the many principal-agent problems, and people aren't always seeking purely profit. There isn't a wage gap. The fact tha… | /r/MensRights | 03/02/17 02:28 PM |
| – | Audi releases ad campaign based on the wage gap myth, then immediately debunks it with their next tweet. You couldn't make this up!Here's an excellent post describing why controlling for 'all other factors' doesn't make the wage gap go away. And there's numerous studies showing it does exist, so just saying it doesn't isn't particularly useful. | /r/MensRights | 03/02/17 01:53 PM |
