Contrary to popular opinion, the term was actually created in men’s rights activist spaces as a critique on the toxic social expectations pushed by society on boys and how those roles and standards negatively impact men in general. This term then got taken out of its original context and twisted into whatever we have now. Toxic masculine standards definitely exist.
