It I think is very state and even county specific. So ask your lawyer is your best bet. Here in CO at least the whole abandonment idea is pretty overblown and is not that much of an issue. Unless you cut off contact and take no interest in your owned property for a significant amount of time.

You are correct in that it is technically possible that after he has been found in contempt, they could theoretically seek extradition. But extradition is a long expensive process involving the state department and seems pretty unlikely to be pursued for these kinds of cases.
