Tell the truth. Have faith that the outcome of telling the truth will be the best possible outcome (in spite of possible short-term pain). Every day you sit on this without confronting your fear of her reaction you make your character weaker. It's not worth the sacrifice of a lie (even of omission). Your character and your frame are of the utmost importance; in the end, she wants a man who's worth something. Be that man. ​

Possibly because that's the default in that state after a child endangerment report until a longer term solution is decided by a court? I don't know the laws there, but that would be my guess.

If we take 'masculinity' to mean anything, then the term 'a real man' is simply a colloquialism for the pinnacle of masculinity. It's not meant literally. IMO, masculinity is a very real set of traits. It includes: Aggression Self-sacrifice for a cause Frame-defining When embodied extremely well, I think it's healthy to hold them up as a pinnacle of manhood.
