Equal rights ends at one point, but you can have equal opportunity in addition (key term here) to equal rights. Under equal rights, jobs shouldn't discriminate against men or women, so on and so forth. This is not contradictory or mutually exclusive to equality of opportunity, which merely adds on (again, important) to the existing structure. In many cases, they are the same. For example, suppose that a sexist hiring manager denies opportunity to women by refusing to hire them. Equal rights and equality of opportunity would both dictate that this is wrong. In fact, if anything, you need equality under the law to have equality of opportunity in the first place. Did I just misunderstand his point?
