One caveat on No. 4: Anyone's who's still new to RP and in the angry shadow might consider avoiding alcohol til things cool off. The booze makes it tougher for a lot of guys to keep frame when faced with certain typical situations. Just a suggestion.

Britain was the boss as long it adhered to the old system of measurements Everything slipped away in the metric era But for fck's sake - it was only a joke.

Listen to The Jesus Lizard, if you can find their stuff. And Pelican.

The hardest things are usually the right things to do. Carry on.

That is some excellent advice. The calmness of the whole approach is really wise -- not getting visibly angry and upset can be a serious challenge.

"I didn't say what you just heard me say."

Good for you, man. That is truly awesome. Keep it up and when anyone tried to disrespect what you've accomplished (they will), ignore them. Stick to your plan.

Fck metric. If that loser system worked, you fckers would be ruling the world, wouldn't you.

Good luck figuring it out when you're called "cute" or "nice" by your mother-in-law.

Plus, you were probably paying for that phone, no?

I'm going to spend some time mulling this. Feels like a big ton of truth I should've heard dropping down on me. Thanks for taking the time and effort to analyze and write -- much appreciated.

Yeah, in the bleakest hours that's the dead-end I feel like I'm facing. I thought I had this whole situation "managed," so to speak, but I eventually figured out she had just waited me out and I'd let her slip into a blind spot. We'll see how it goes. Many thanks.

Thanks for chiming in. I am going to follow the advice you and some of the others here have posted, which is to finesse the situation while maintaining frame. It's going to be a challenge but the great thing about this forum is that there's so much wisdom freely available.

I will do that ASAP -- haven't seen that forum before. Thanks.

Excellent approach. Thanks for your insights.

You are absolutely correct. I allowed a blind spot to develop. My own fault. Thanks for the splash of cold water.

Absolutely brilliant insights: "I want to be independent." == "I want to look independent." (I don't, however, want to actually take responsibility for myself. That's hard work.) "I would never do that." == "I wouldn't want anyone knowing I did that." "I am a good person." == "I want you to think I am a good person."

I can see I phrased that rather crudely but I certainly wasn't aiming to bash the Mormons. I meant it positively, whether you can handle that or not.

Not sure what I said to trigger this but perhaps I misspoke or was off-topic. This doesn't represent my analysis at all. Either way, take care and good luck.

Continue to maintain that calm frame you mentioned. Let it set like concrete and even though it'll NEVER fix your Dad's situation (or your Mom's) you'll be well-positioned for the future. You're way ahead of most guys your age who come from families like that.

Even as I type this I know its kind of lame but in my mind the analogous process is valid: this is like learning a kata when you're a child in karate class -- you get a few steps down cold at a time. Before long it all flows seamlessly together. Good luck and good for you.

I'm amused that anyone would think the LDSers are incapable of RP - we're talking about folks who enshrined plate-spinning as a freaking sacrament until the federal govt threatened to invade Salt Lake City. Hey theFoamBorn, ignore this Mormon bashing and carry on.

Didn't any of your buddies raise an eyebrow and say WTF? Or was it very late in a very crowded place where they wouldn't necessarily have noticed what was transpiring?

Black-Legion is absolutely correct when he says have an objective in mind. Your feelings are telling you that texting is better than nothing - that's a clear indication you have no solid objective in mind. Perhaps you don't realize it but it surely appears that you hope that by 'being there for her' you'll accrue benefits. That's beta as hell. Snap out of it, son.

Succumbing to those entrenched feelings if guilt over how other people may feel is a weakness you need to stamp out of yourself. It doesn't mean you can't understand and help others - you just do it on your own terms, not because you feel compelled. Sometimes people do counter positional things on the basis of guilt and/or empathy - but it's just an insidious way of avoiding the task of making the hard decision.

And Epictetus' writings play a key role in the evolution of the two main characters. Great stuff.
