Agree that libel/defamation/slander lawsuits would be the closest we have in the US. Just to clarify, libel is "a published false statement that is damaging to a person's reputation". Nothing in the OP would be deemed as being a false statement, so they would not win the case even if everyone were to stop buying his candles.

If fatherless-ness was the main factor then yes. But I suspect it is more like fatherless-ness is a requisite factor. It narrows down the pool of potential shooters, but then other factors still have to come into play. For example, being male is a requisite factor.

The problem with gender-blind job recruiting is that it just perpetuates any past discrimination that has already occurred. If in theory, your resume looks less impressive because of real past discrimination, then shouldn't some type of corrective action be taken now, in order to disrupt the continual perpetuation of this cycle? This is the theory behind affirmative action as I understand it.
