I mean, it is still currently a very gendered issue (not just DV but murder of a partner). Can I have sources / statistics? Not trying to be smug, that's actually a very good and much more productive point that I can totally stand behind. It actually reflects my own personal experience. As a child, I went through 4 different DV shelters for women. One of my biological mother's ex was violent and clearly abusive but so was my biological mother. Her second ex tho was completely innocent and was fa…

Right? I am completely lost reading this thread. I do not understand either where people are going with this. I completely fail to see the purpose of arguing semantics and there's very little to gain from debating this subject. There would be a clear gender bias if there was also an epidemic of women killing their husbands/ ex partner, because that would mean that the families of victims would get unequal access to justice and it would clearly send the message that men's lives are worth less tha…

Changing public perceptions about deeply ingrained social inequalities takes a while. More often than not, it takes more than one generation. 6 years is nothing. Violence against black people in the US didn't end with the outlawing of slavery - in fact, the KKK was born just around 2 weeks after the 13th amendment was ratified.

I'm sure you understand that most people who have never been close to an abusive person almost universally just... don't get it. It really seems to be a sort of thing that one most witness first-hand to understand. Oh absolutely. This is what makes it even more painful. Like just hearing yourself asking for help and disclosing what happened makes you feel completely bonkers. The extent to which they can go is so utterly insane it makes it barely believable. And then when you are met with disbeli…

I'm sorry - english is not my first language and despite being bilingual I sometimes make small mistakes like this, especially when it comes to words with connotations, false friends (words that are the same in two languages but mean different things) or when the etymological root is ambiguous. Here I was thinking of "hard as steel" and assumed "hardly" would convey what I meant. I meant "hardly" like "firmly", "absolutely", "totally" etc IRL my accent makes it clear that I'm not a native speake…

Abuse is about a pattern of control I mean you got your answer right there. I don't think the model falls short as no one that I know of, including social workers (both friends and the ones involved in my case as a child) has ever implied that occasional isolated acts are in itself a proof of an abusive relationship. That's why it's a wheel - abuse is a pattern and that pattern involves more than one elements described by the wheel over a period of time, not isolated acts. I've yet to hear a pra…

Discloser: I'm a woman, so feel free to correct me if I'm missing important bits. I saw someone on this sub a few days ago saying that the Duluth model was "debunked" alltogether or something along those lines. Even the Wikipedia article says it's "pseudoscientific". I firmly disagree. Coercitive control as described by the Duluth Model DO exist, it's undeniable to anyone who has known an abusive individual. My biological mother, for example, used every single one of the tactics in the Power and…

It's so sad. I think the tides are turning a tiny little bit, but there's still a long ride to go. Men overwhelmingly report that their suffering always gets downplayed and brushed off when they disclose their abuse. Yet in conversations like this, the comments inevitability gets derailed by long lecturing, whataboutism and condemnations - ironically proving them right. Plus, it's my general belief that a diverse range of perspectives being considered and allowed to criticize is the best prevent…

I know this thread is 2 days old but I wanted to share my perspective on this. I am a woman who grew up with an incredibly sadistic woman as a mother. I wish people understood that the way we discuss women as always the victim and never the perpetrator harms both men and women. Growing up, I witnessed my mother violently assault her ex, call the cops on him, lie and reverse victim and aggressor. When she wasn't in a relationship, I became the target of her abuse. Sleep deprivation, bloody violen…

I'm a woman and my monster / abuser is my biological mother, and even I was met with this kind of shit behavior by court appointed social services. The "support" paid by the state that I received when I finally gathered the courage to file a complaint for criminal harrassment was me trying to defend myself for one fucking hour about how I was not a horrible person, and had to disclose the entirety of my extremely traumatic childhood (for which I have a clinical PTSD diagnosis), and how she physi…

Holy ---- 😦 I have temporal lobe epilepsy - when I was undiagnosed and without medication I had dreamy states - what middle age Catholic mystics like Teresa of Ávila called "visions". These episodes are the wildest thing I ever experienced. Most of us do not have the words to explain it, and it's almost impossible to describe to someone who never experienced it. To make it short, I had intense flashbacks of scenes I never experienced, with moods I never felt, and sentiments that weren't my own. …
