I had a trans friend in elementary school. This was in the 1970s, and she's still trans to this day. Kids, parents, and teachers were either cruel to her or treated her like she was amusing. I don't know that there needs to be some deep discussion about it, but when my kids first got curious I simply said "eh, that's not really a big deal, some people are just more comfortable choosing for themselves"

Harassment isn't that much of a grey area. Yelling at strangers is harassment. Giving a compliment and expecting to get a conversation out of it is harassment.
