Sometimes these rates aren't published on a per-event basis, but on some long time frame. They answer questions of the form: "What percentage of women on this form of birth control became pregnant in one year?" This usually assumes perfect use, too. So a 96% effectiveness by that meaning means 4 in 100 guys would get a woman pregnant if they used that system.

Of course you can be gay and be Catholic. The Church, in fact, says that anyone can be Catholic (and it wants everyone to be, of course). The only catch is that to be a good Catholic you have to do your best to lead a holy life. Sex outside of marriage is the opposite of that. There's nothing special about homosexuality, frankly. The desires themselves aren't sinful (the Church says as much) because you don't have control over them. How you act on your desires, though, is where morality comes in…

Arguing against biological determinism against a gay man seems odd. If sexual preferences are something that people are born with, then what logical reason is there to think that certain other aptitudes or desires are absolutely, no question, not determined?

This is my feeling about it as well, but I'm trying to find data of any kind to back that up. That data would just need to show that harassers target various demographics roughly equally. Once that's been shown, then your comment gains a lot of empirical support.

Wu went on to point out that the study doesn’t consider why women are harassed more than men when they use online services like Xbox Live or why women game journalists get more threats than their male counterparts. I don't believe this, because people are generally jerks online to everyone. Playing counter-strike was a constant barrage of harassment and threats (to mostly males). I don't want to make that claim without evidence, though, so I'm wondering if there are sources that discuss targets …

To better aid the understanding of the data, I made some plots. View them here. What stood out to me was that the rate of increase of female participation (by ratio of degrees awarded) has been mostly steady since 1966. Linear fits of those lines shows a yearly increase in the ratios of around 1.4% to 1.8%. Also, the plateaus in the plots at various times are interesting, especially in the Bachelor's degree data.
