Yes, the post and comment quality has diminished considerably in my opinion. The (hopefully younger) men make wildly broad, imprecise, and unreasonable generalizations that, while perhaps having a nugget of truth, is discarded because of how ridiculous the actual statements read or how vitriolic or bitter the phrasing sounds. Most of the women here at this point don't even disagree with the core ideas of what is considered "RP"; they simply disagree with the phrasing, so there's not really much …

I saw a post or comment one time that claimed that gardening as a hobby is the key to happiness in life. I think about that from time to time. I can't say I've ever met a gardener who was unhappy overall.

Some are looking for a place to vent, some are looking for their sadism or schadenfreude fix, some are here to troll and nettle, and others are here to genuinely seek truth and understanding. I have actually learned a lot from observing users and conversations on this sub (older threads from years ago were a lot more valuable imo), a nice chunk of those lessons being the interactions themselves rather than the content. I agree with you: largely the situation will not change for people as a whole…

I do understand and empathize with what you're saying, but that's a different reason than the property angle. Idk, it's not a big deal; I just found that line of thinking unconvincing. As usual, people should find and invest in those they're compatible with.

I feel you on that. That's why I find it pretty cool that in some cultures, children take on both maiden and paternal last names. Don't know how that plays out with multiple generations though.

The whole "woman taking the man's last name" dispute is odd to me. If the argument against it is "not wanting to be labeled a man's property," doesn't that mean you should have a problem with maiden names as well? Even if you got your name from your mother's side, at some point that name likely traces back to a man. You've run into the same problem. Am I tripping? On another note, I don't think I've ever encountered someone who brags: "my parents tell me I should be a lawyer since I argue so muc…

I think this is a great comment. My only contention is the inclusion of this: Not all women do this, especially if they are already really into the guy. as a refutation. While that statement is true, it's not particularly helpful or informative. Sh*t testing is a behavior many men (and women) have observed, to the point where I am almost certain that every man has at least witnessed if not personally experienced it. I have noticed that most people in these conversations operate under the impress…

So I've read the book, and I think it is a useful framework for communicating appreciation and value. Initially, I had an unfavorable impression of the concept based on how people tend to use it online (mainly people using their "love language" as a justification to be materialistic or entitled), but after actually reading the book for myself with an open mind, I changed my outlook on the value of things like gifts for those who genuinely appreciate the thought and consideration behind them. I think she explained how she felt pretty well including subsequent comments. She felt used because of both the lack of reciprocity from the guy and her unrealized expectations. The dude got oral sex, ejaculated on her face, and then left. There was no reciprocity there at all from what I'm understanding; only his satisfaction. Also, she goes on to mention that she didn't consider their relationship to be casual; she was hoping their relationship would develop. This is a prime example of what I …

Certainly not my intention. I understand how you likely got there, but I find that interpretation rather uncharitable. Pasting my response to the thread about spending money on women for dates here. Thoughts? Here's the thing: when courting women, many men, unfortunately, do things they don't genuinely want or like to do because they are under the impression that women find those actions endearing. IMO, the reason guys talk so much about being used for meals and feeling taken advantage of is because of perceived violation(s) of what is in essence a convert contract. The question I asked you was why you chose to hone in on an irrelevant part of my comment instead of the main point of highlighting (potentially) bad-faith, adversarial interpretations. I did not ask why women had a problem with the word 'withhold'; they explained why they felt that way well enough for themselves whether I agree with their interpretation or not. This thread serves as a useful reminder that many on this sub are only here to try to feel like they've won something. I have little doubt that most people knew what the titular question was getting at (esp. given the million times it's been asked), but unfortunately many ladies chose to take the route of contesting the verbiage, ostensibly to invalidate the question in its entirety. Which is actually invalid in this case because, from what I've seen, 'withhold' does not inherently imply entitle…

Any time the more heated topics of sexual pasts and the like come up, I'm left wondering why some of the women who participate get irked or even offended at the dating preferences/criteria of men who they've implied they would never sleep with (or even date) irl. That's odd to me. This applies to the men here as well when discussing women's preferences and criteria.

some men give reasons like "damaged pair-bonding" (pseudo-science AFAIK), "more likely to cheat" (true, but not really a certainty), or whatever else. In my opinion, I think a good number of guys do this in order to rationalize the 'ick' factor that they feel. Instead of just saying that the idea of committing to a woman who's been with many men is gross to them, some feel the need to find a justification that is more 'acceptable.' Which I guess is an alien concept to many women. The idea that t…

I get being upset at the hypocrisy. I'm still trying to work out my opinion on whether or not it is truly insecurity as well as whether that is a bad thing if it is. Like for me, I would feel off-put and slightly frustrated if a woman asked me for a deep-dive into the types of dates I took others on in the past or tried to compare timelines in terms of relationship progression. However, I can understand how, from a woman's point-of-view, if I did lofty or especially thoughtful things for women i…

I agree; there really isn't a way to ask without making someone feel like their answer will result in negative judgement. I would imagine this is why some women lie when asked directly about their pasts. They don't want a potential relationship opportunity to be ruined. Do you think you would have a negative opinion if a guy you were with had an adverse reaction to something you'd done in the past?

Understandable. On this point: I wouldn't want to date someone who is virginity-obsessed What behaviors qualify as obsession for you? Would simply preferring a virgin qualify? Hi Smurf, yours has been an interesting perspective to read on this situation. I know plenty of men who use SA Real quick, what does SA stand for here? I feel like I should know it, but it isn't coming to me. More importantly, how far would that rule go for you? Ah, I think I understand your viewpoint better now, and the boss/higher ups portion helped a lot. I can see there being some appeal to being able to seduce one of the richest men on the planet. Let's slow down a minute. If I understand you correctly, you are saying that there are women who would sleep with Bill Gates. I absolutely agree with you on that. What I'm saying is that it's likely that they'd only do it because they see some material benefit for doing so; they don't actually fantasize about the idea of sleeping with him (and others like him, this isn't actually about Bill Gates specifically). I agree that there is nuance to it, but it's difficult to articulate properly. Accomplishments seem to matter (i.e. increase attraction) if the woman in question holds value in it and what it represents for the achiever, but I'm not sure they matter in a vacuum (not saying you claimed that; just trying to work out my thoughts). Becoming an Eagle Scout is something very few people achieve, but I don't know if many of them are swatting women off of them, you know? I think accomplishments matter in…

I'm a guy. Whether or not women will have sex with a wealthy man has no bearing on whether they actively desire to do so. The point being made is that money is not sexually arousing in and of itself, but other guys were implying that it was because rich, physically unattractive men are able to have sex with women. Money gets the same strip tease and sexy panties as Magic Mike. Are you sure? Would you prefer a strip tease done because you had to pay for it or done because the woman in question ge…

No, there is a difference between "I want to have sex with you" and "I find you sexually attractive/you are very attractive, blah blah blah" but neither are what I consider using plausible deniability. It may not have been your intention, but please don't be a smart aleck. The specific scenario could work without plausible deniability, but it isn't as necessary to set up because if you are directly telling a woman you find her sexually attractive, you are not pretending that sex isn't your goal.…

Narnia, I think your comment helped clarify my understanding of Grid's question. /u/GridReXX, are you asking why men are reluctant to admit a fault? If so, I agree that this is a trend, a prevalent one at that, but I think it's separate from the trust-based fear discussed earlier. Many of the examples I've seen men provide consist of some insecurity that they've divulged later being leveraged against them in order to hurt them. Men here are often full of hate as they are in their TRP rage phase, or Blackpill perma rage. They also tend to try to overly codify things is specific ways, often going well beyond what the evidence will support. Women here, on the other hand, tend to be in defensive mode. They are often worried about what any admission migh…

So, in your opinion, do women consume beauty products for men or for themselves? Or is it a case of equivocation where a woman saying "I do this for myself" means that she's doing it to attract the man she wants (which is something benefiting her, so it's "for herself")?

I won't pretend to know what the word means definitively, but I do think women want men who are better than them in some personally-defined aspect, but when having these conversations, it's become abundantly clear that women have an aversion to that phrasing. I think they associate a man being "better" or "superior" with malevolent subjugation. Some say something along the lines of "My husband/boyfriend is not better than me, but I look up to him and respect him greatly. He's earned my admiratio…

Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone, That hypergamy thread is a perfect example of what I was talking about with Sonic the other day; even in 'Discussion' threads, some people take a more adversarial (sometimes performative) stance and try to "win" the conversation. Some of y'all just wake up swinging. On another topic, when looking at something like advertising, there are many male-targeted ads that imply the acquisition of women's attention upon use of the product, but I can't really say I…

An argument being had in another thread made me think of this question. Is the following statement a lie? Disclaimer: By 'lie' I mean is the statement misleading; intention is not a factor in this case. "Grades don't matter for being accepted into an Ivy League." Looking at that statement in abstract, I would say it is. If someone were to say that aloud, people would probably look at them like they're crazy. However, when put into context of the application process, I can see how that claim woul…

Not quite the direction I was expecting; let me edit the question real quick. EDIT: I wanted the statement to be in a general sense.

Skimming over this argument between you and u/SylvestorTalone is both entertaining and thought-provoking. I'm going to come back and read the thread more fully later, but in the meantime, could both of you please explain if and why you think the following statement is or is not a lie (specifically equivocation): "Generally, grades do not matter much for being accepted into an Ivy League." EDIT: After reading the thread fully, insults included, I take back my claim about the argument being entert…

The problem is that I already knew all of that Ah, I didn't get that from your initial comment; my mistake. It would be like straight men having to point out that gender matters - you guys don’t care about gay men finding you attractive any more than we care about ugly guys I mean, if I told someone "when looking for love, I focus less on gender and more on connection", I don't think they'd conclude I'm straight. They'd likely think connection is more important than the gender of the person. How…

Pour one out for my man Bob I appreciate you outlining your perspective; hopefully what I aimed to get across was clear.

Yes, I agree, but I'm attempting to explain why men who hear statements like that may think otherwise. I think when most guys hear "I focus less on looks and more on other qualities", it's taken to mean that at the extremes (see my previous work analogy), the guy with the kindness or relationship-oriented qualities will be chosen. This is not the case. Instead, as you said, looks are a threshold. Also, even if most guys realize looks are a threshold, the perception of where that threshold actual…

I think the point of contention is not that women don't care about appearance at all (though some people do take it that way) but that the statement implies if not claims directly that personality/kindness matter more and outweigh appearance. If someone applying for a job is told "when considering employees, this company puts the focus less on education and more on work experience", but sees that the company consistently chooses inexperienced college graduates over non-college-educated candidate…

That's fair. I think that's a useful distinction to keep in mind, thank you.

Got it. I can see this view on debates in other people's posts as well. However, wouldn't that mean the debates have a performative quality to it? I've noticed that some if not many interactions have more of "trying to win" attitude/approach than trying to come to an agreement or consensus, and I would imagine the performative aspect of debate or "appealing to the crowd" contributes heavily to that.

I'm trying to find a good way to phrase this, but what is the purpose of asking for proof of the effectiveness of RP or other anecdotal belief(s)? What proof would anyone be able to provide that would convince someone who is staunchly of the opposite belief? Pretty much any example or anecdote would likely either be explained away or hand-waved as something other than what the anecdote holder claims it is or outright dismissed. Even if it is a good anecdote (however that's defined), does anyone …

I can only speak for myself, but one thing that continues to stand out to me is that many people here and otherwise presume to know how others should live their lives. While I think most people can agree on some do's and don'ts, living my life based solely on the opinions of others or based on solely on probability is not an appealing prospect. Quite frankly, something that I try to keep in mind when reading both this sub and others is that there is non-negligible chance that some opinions are c…

I agree for the most part, except I think your last sentence depends on what one considers to be dangerous. An illogical, overly emotional man is certainly more physically dangerous, but I don't think enough people consider just how much damage a scorned or slighted woman can do socially. "Hell hath no fury" as they say, but I do agree with you that on the whole both have essentially equal parts logical and emotional.

If I understand what you're saying correctly, I think I've come to a similar conclusion. I don't agree with the idea among some men that women are "illogical." To me, women's behaviors, thoughts, etc. are "logical", but men and women seem to operate from different premises and objectives, leading both to claim that the other group "doesn't make sense." A great example of this happening around here is when people assume that everyone holds the same definition of what a word like 'respect' means, …

Hi everyone, I've lurked in this sub for a few years now, and I can say I've learned a lot in the process, both about relationships and the way people tend to argue. I've been thinking about the idea of men as a group being more logical and women operating more from a place of emotion, and I'm not sure I agree with the idea as much as I may have at one point. From what I've seen both here and in real life, some (if not many) men tend to come to hold a position from an emotional reason and later …
