Signed "Stressed Kwamashu". Kwamashu is most unsafe area of Durban South Africa. Think about that for a minute. In poor, unsafe, lesser civilized countries, all bets are off. It is the ultimate in survival especially for a kid who lost parents and desperate to raise herself above the survival level. She should raise this dude up with repayment but she won't. As long as there is poverty there will always be many types of currency for surivial.

Not all people are like that. Cruel, sick, sociopathic people are like that. Often not parented well. Um, now that you mention it, maybe most people are like this because most young people have incompetent parents. Sad.

Ironically, many of those single ones with their own resources are envied by the married ones.

There is no such thing as balance for most people. Your dad sacrificed certain freedom to save and take care of his family. He took responsibility for the kids he made, which often means no balance. I know plenty of semi-retired guys who have made their wealth and now have the luxury of saying "I wish I'd spent more time with my kids when they were young". I've never known anyone to go around homeless camps and ask those guys if they wish they'd spent more time working.

Now as you recover and get stronger physically, mentally and financially, you will save that income for valuable things, meaningful activities, improving yourself, not throwing it away on a wedding. Bravo

No we don't. We have options: earplugs, beer, music, more important interruptions, improve ourselves, trade up.

So what else is new. All relationships are an exchange of valuables. Any business person knows this.

Your concern is justified. You can count on your nest egg getting chipped away by inflation and higher taxes, also known as involuntary contributions toward non-savers.

A lot of them, if financially frugal, would have to live very boring lives with too many limits. Nobody would think they're cool. They also don't think they will ever save enough to have anything worth having, so why not live in debt like most of the population, and have fun all the time. Life is short. Social media selfies are forever.

Selling your soul to get rich and famous is not just a saying.

My friend married that girl. He lost his family, friends, autonomy and eventually sanity. He's in marital prison. She's mentally ill. Certifiably borderline personality. If he were to leave her she would flip out and probably commit crimes. You'd never know it meeting her the first few times. These types are crazy for sex and attention and can't help themselves, they have to play psycho games. Without drama, they wither on the vine.

having babies for thugs and losers Ugh. Low standards when young. Lower standards when old.

And you might not even have sons, so there's that risk too.

Indeed. I’d tell her “I hope you can forgive yourself for not being born into self sufficiency and wealth, which is very attractive in a partner - you know - the equal rights, equal assets, equal commitment to the union. Who hurt you - that you feel you need marriage in order to not get stuck lime your sister?”

Thank you for sharing this. How are your kids turning out? You have a lot to teach them.
