"opting out of marriage" is easy. Just don't shack up with someone and live like a married couple for 10+ years. Don't commingle your assets and raise children together. Don't do everything a married couple does EXCEPT actually get married. You act like it is some kind of trap. If you put someone else in a position where they are completely dependent on you, and provide a support system at home for you and your children while you go out and earn your fortune, it is not rational for you to expect…

so, you live with a woman for ~25 years, she stays at home and keeps the house and raises your child while you go build a business and earn a lot of money, and when it is all over, she isn't entitled to anything because you didn't sign a marriage license and go through a ceremony? That is why common-law marriage is a thing. To give legal status to a relationship that embodies that marriage in every aspect except for the paperwork.

I didn't say it was or that she deserved half the business. But they clearly had a long-term committed relationship and he admitted that he was the sole breadwinner for the entirety of it. As she was, for all intents and purposes, his partner in the relationship and mother to their child for ~25 years, she is certainly entitled to SOME of the assets they built during those years. I have no idea how much that should be but she shouldn't walk away empty-handed.

This woman had zero legal connection to this man they owned a home together, cohabitated for ~25 years and had a child together. The only thing they weren't was legally married. In a lot of other places, they would be considered married by common law.

a mod in /r/politics once sent me a warning that if I said a particular thing again, I would be banned. I don't even remember what it was, but my response was "ban me, Fuckstick, see if I care". I received the ban message almost instantly. I removed /r/politics from my feed and never looked back.

I grew up in a small redneck town and my brother was in a similar situation when he as 19 or 20. He was driving with his (pregnant) girlfriend one night and was stopped and blocked in by a couple of redneck boys in a truck because of some perceived insult to one of their girlfriends. The rednecks approached his driver and passenger windows and started assaulting them so he floored it and cut it hard around the truck blocking his way. He ended up running over one of their legs. The redneck idiots…
