You do pretty much the same thing. I'll give you an example that used all the time with me. I'm a web developer and have a coworker who liked to argue for the sake of it but he is always asking for people's opinions or help. I've gotten to the point where I'll just tell him how to fix his problem the way I would but as soon as he tries to start debating my methodology, I literally just tell him I'm not going to waste my valuable time debating with him.

I'd agree with you if he, the professor, had even tried to find a differing viewpoint. Instead, he tried to make it seem as though Juvenal, the author, was actually referencing society as a whole or some other bullshit and pretty much accepted the opinions as correct. Again, morning class that I only needed for a gen ed requirement, I couldn't care less about trying to change any opinions in a class meant for seniors trying to bullshit their way through the useless gen ed curriculum.
