In my friend group, I’ve always been told I go for “medium ugly” men. I found that funny - but the most consistent thing about the people I dated for extended periods of time is that I learnt a lot from them. I like to feel like I am with someone who is my intellectual superior. I tend to be the one with much higher emotional intelligence though. My sweet spot would be to find a man who is smart, grounded, a little nerdy, takes their fitness seriously and aptly emotionally intelligent. These are…

Yeah you can want to do something but not do it - and that comes back down to restraint. And yes, even in that abusive relationship, I did not punch a wall or throw things at my partner because I had regard for him as a person. I still do despite the way our relationship ended. And I experienced gaslighting and guilt tripping a lot from him. The wife in question here has a pattern of being violent. That’s not going to change until OP puts a clear boundary. Now I will say, I lean more stoic than …

You’re being abused and you’ve been trained to take her abuse. I’m so sorry you’re in this situation. I feel so saddened for you. I too was in such a situation years ago with someone who would scream and yell at me violently. Verbal abuse is terrible - please don’t dumb it down by saying you’re not “perfect”. You’re not supposed to be perfect. You’re supposed to be yourself especially with your life partner. I sincerely hope you get the courage to leave this situation, get your children or work …

As someone tho survived a domestically abusive relationship that wasn’t physical - this is EXTREMELY tone deaf. DV doesn’t need to be black eyes to be legit. Infact before the bruises and cuts, it often starts like this, throwing shit at your partner in rage, yelling, screaming at them... I was engaged to someone who could scream and yell at me to the point that it affected my psyche. He also guilt tripped me and gaslit me so much to the point where I questioned reality a lot. Now I flinch and g…

I ended an engagement and one of my reasons was my ex was too much of a validation seeker of his friends. He too had a “Mark” who would involve himself in our relationship more than was appropriate. I eventually lost all respect for him - and chose to let go of him. After that experience, I decided that when I’m dating it is absolutely crucial for me that I find a man who is - 1. going to be in my corner, 2. Does not worship his friends. 3. Does not worship me either. By that I mean, he does not…

This is reassuring. I’m 30, in the same boat as OP. Left an abusive relationship at 28 and have been dating but admittedly I could be a lot more strategic and I have put in lots of effort to upgrade myself holistically - healthy, appearance and all. I have been meeting more solid men and I am way more sure of myself now and I’m not dating from a point of ‘wanting to be chosen’ only as I mostly did in my 20s.

Stop thinking he doesn’t understand and start taking what he does as an indication that he does understand and is still choosing to do what he’s doing. Stop feeling sorry and pity for him - you will feel pain and deep regret by choosing to see a man from this POV. You want to choose a competent life partner. Vet for competence in a man.

OP I ended my engagement to my ex fiance for similar reasons. We also had the larger problem of the relationship being abusive, but one part we were not aligned on was me being a SAHM. He didn’t support it. And towards the end he started to change tune on the matter mostly because he just didn’t want to lose me/be alone. It takes great guts to just cut your losses and leave him where he is. You need to prioritise the life you want and choose the man who is aligned in that vision.

I concur. As someone who spent fruitful years between 25 and 27 - building up a man who was severely emotionally immature - and then became abusive, it is my biggest cost and most important lesson. I knew I should have cut my losses early - but I got swept away in the lifestyle he had and was also very trauma bonded as he was my first sexual experience. Now I know, I should just cut ties early. It’s empowering to move with that level of confidence instead of just giving men a chance. It’s not fa…

Yeah I look at character as the things that the person will do/say behind closed doors. But also, we all sometimes do things we’re not proud of. So for me character is seen in how they treat people they don’t need anything from, how disciplined they are, how generous they are, their ability to be kind but firm, their graciousness, the way they speak of their friends and family, their level of gratitude etc. I’m also talking as someone who is usually the life of the party - and I already have a b…

Mine is: Be extremely careful of men who lead with their disadvantage. Be very careful of men who make insults about you as jokes - it can start out as jokes but it can soon turn to be terrible/abusive. Only choose to be with men you respect from the beginning - and make sure they have a decent reputation. Choose character and looks first - then think about their personality. Character is what makes a man a great man. And his looks will keep your sexual appetite high for him. If he has bad chara…

This is such an excellent well thought out plan. I have no advice but just to say stick with it. You are on a great path and I truly hope you get your hearts desires!

These are the first signs of emotionally abusive relationships - which can turn physically abusive later on. I thought just the same as you - that my ex was a good person who just couldn’t handle his emotions. Until it got really really bad. We often blame ourselves because we believe we have that much control over a person’s emotions. That is something he has to arrive to himself. This is not a small thing - and it clearly affects you. You don’t yell at him because you respect him as a person -…

Please don’t excuse his anger issues - and him getting mad at you being annoying. You seem so committed to being a good partner - which is a noble thing, but please remember that you should want to be with a man who desires to also be a great partner. Men who hate women don’t tend to strive towards that end. From the sounds of it he probably blames you for his anger - seeing as you’re already justifying the anger and yelling as a result of you being annoying. When he annoys you - do you yell at …

Did you have a strategy that you approached with dating and finding your man? I also aspire to be a stay at home mum and also have help with cleaners and Nannie’s etc for my kiddos. Happy to be cooking though because I love to cook.

Hey! I’m moving to Chicago in two weeks - I’m 29. I used to actively attend and was a member at a reformed Baptist church till my mid twenties when I had a crisis of faith. I am learning how to believe again without the extreme dogmatic culture that I had in that particular church. I’m also pretty physically fit and would love to find a man who is masculine and wants to start a family. I don’t mind a connection with your friend haha!

Btw by off the table I mean until we’re at least boyfriend and girlfriend - not husband/wife. I’m African, most Africans (who are what I’ve mostly dated) are still somewhat socially conservative so it’s not a hard ask to wait for sex until you’re in an exclusive relationship. But I do plan on dating out once I’m out of nun mode. I also lowkey fear not being able to give myself fully to my future husband by ending up making bets on men in the dating period who end up using me. I realise that I ca…

Okay I get that but we also have body counts to worry about don’t we? I chose poorly before with my ex fiance but not because he was a Chad - he was actually a nerd. He was very eager to commit actually, and he was my first sexual experience. For context I was previously in the reformed Baptist faith which is very conservative and people normally wait till marriage. But my ex was a covert narcissist (I didn’t know what this was when I met him). And before I knew it he had already began to tear m…

Hey Red Pill Dad, I noticed you’ve referred to him as her boyfriend. But they’re not boyfriend and girlfriend. When I read her situation, it sounded like she’s really over giving in a situationship. This is what a lot of my friends have found themselves in over the past few years. A state of over giving to men who never give them commitment. I personally prefer to leave sex off the table until there’s a verbal commitment of a relationship. And I thought this was more inline with RPW theory. But …

I am really happy that the guy you’re dating seems to be a green flag so far. I hope that works out positively for you. I chose July because I started in January and that’ll make it 6 months by July. I’m really trying to focus this period on me and my self esteem - because my low self esteem is what has chosen problematic men. When my esteem was higher, I actually selected reasonably good partners.

Girl praise be for me too because I’m a black girl trying to expand my options and I’ve always been more muscular/curvy. Trying to trim down the last 20 lbs whilst on nun mode so I can get back out there!

Thanks so much for your encouragement. How long after you ended your engagement did you meet your now husband? Everyday I wake up more confident that I can get what I want - which is a kind, generous, hardworking man who would love to support a stay at home mum. My ex wasn’t aligned on the staying at home part and even compared his responsibility as the main breadwinner should we have ended up in that situation as “slavery” - sigh! I’m glad I left to say the least. Now each day that passes I bec…

I’m absolutely on this wave as soon as I leave nun mode. It’s been a period of lots of reflection for me so far - and I felt like I needed it because I had a problem of a broken picker. But soon as I’m done, I’m putting myself on the apps again. I believe in myself this time in a way that I didn’t before.

Yes this is what I’m now doing with my therapist. I’m taking time off actively dating (on the apps) for 5 more months but I’m open to going on dates with people I meet in person should they ask. In fact I have one this evening from a guy I met at a conference last week. I have taken time to finally ask myself - what do I want? And what do I really like in a man? These are not questions I ever asked myself when I was younger. I had an idea but I didn’t have a clear vision for the life I wanted. I…

Thanks for sharing this. Yes a small part of me felt like “am I cursed?” Because of the ‘alpha widow’ thing. But honestly looking back, based on what I know now about marriage compatibility, he wouldn’t have been the best choice for me. I know that logically at least. I think during this period of nun mode - my main aim is to address my tendency to have low self esteem - because I really don’t look like I do. I take care of myself physically, I do well financially, I have a great personality - i…

I’m like you - I came to a lot of this realization quite late. I just turned 29. I was engaged at 27 but I ended that engagement due to my ex fiancé’s verbal/emotional abuse and his general emotional instability when he got mad. I really should have never been with that man but I got caught up in the drama of that relationship and overstayed because we met when I was about to turn 25. I’m on nun mode right now until July 2025 to fix my broken picker after dating another man for 3 months who also…
